DraftKings MLB: Friday Picks

DraftKings MLB: Friday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

Pitcher

Max Scherzer, WAS vs. SD ($12,700) - Strikeout potential will have us reaching for the chalk on the main slate, as the Padres whiff a quarter of the time against right-handed pitching, while Scherzer maintains a strikeout rate of 32 percent. It is also worth noting that San Diego is a bottom-10 team in runs scored per game on the road.

Dan Straily, MIA vs. LAA ($7,500) - Those who have decided to write Straily off as a known commodity are missing out on a quality pitcher. The 28-year-old's fastball and slider are both significantly above average, and he has notched a swinging strike rate of nearly 12 percent over nine starts. The Angels rate as a bottom-5 team against righties according to wOBA and carry the lowest ISO in the league on the road (.126).

Catcher

Yasmani Grandal, LAD vs. CHC ($3,500) - Jake Arrieta possesses the least effective cutter in the league according to RAA, but that hasn't stopped him from throwing it at a nearly 20 percent clip. Grandal has tallied a 2.5 RAA against the pitch, and holds a .225 ISO against righties over 102 at-bats.

First Base

Yonder Alonso, OAK at NYY ($4,000) - It may seem odd to think of Mashairo Tanaka as a potential stack target, but the Japanese import currently holds a bloated 6.56 ERA in nine starts this season. Alonso is hitting the ball in the air 55 percent of the time, which should allow him to get plenty of lift against Tanaka, who carries a 50 percent ground-ball rate. Alonso is expected to return to the lineup after missing a game due to getting plunked on the hand, but we can pivot to Chris Davis ($4,200) against the below-average fastball of Joe Musgrove if he is unable to play.

Second Base

Jose Altuve, HOU vs. BAL ($4,700) - Kevin Gausman has been hit hard by righties in 2017, surrendering a .595 slugging percentage and a .439 wOBA in 25.2 innings. Altuve is a top-20 hitter against the fastball according to RAA, while Gausman's heater has tallied a mark of -3.0.

Third Base

Joey Gallo, TEX at TOR ($4,300) - Mike Bolsinger relies on ground balls to get outs, but that's not a strategy that is likely to pay dividends against Gallo, who will enter the contest holding the second highest fly ball rate in the league among qualified hitters. Any batter who faces Bolsinger needs to be ready to hit the curveball, and Gallo looks to be up to the challenge, having notched a 3.7 RAA against the pitch in 2017.

Shortstop

Carlos Correa, HOU vs. BAL ($4,100) - Correa's prowess against the fastball doesn't quite match Altuve's, but he may have a better chance of hitting the ball out of the park against Gausman, as he currently holds a .240 ISO and a 42 percent hard contact rate against righty pitching. Correa has also swung the bat well at home, as evidenced by his .300/.374/.575 slash line at Minute Made Park over 22 games.

Outfield

Marcell Ozuna, MIA vs. LAA ($3,900) - Jesse Chavez's reverse split has seen him allow seven home runs in just 28.2 innings against righties this season. Meanwhile, Ozuna has kept a .264 ISO against righty hurlers to go along with a 45 percent hard contact rate.

Matt Kemp, ATL at SF ($4,200) - I generally don't find batter vs. pitcher splits helpful, but it's hard to ignore the fact that Matt Kemp has logged 61 career at-bats against opposing starter Matt Cain, and has kept a .557 slugging percentage over that span. Also, Kemp has notched an 11.0 RAA against the fastball this season, while Cain has produced a negative run value with the pitch.

Bryce Harper, WAS vs. SD ($5,300) - Luis Perdomo has allowed a .613 slugging percentage against left-handed hitting over 12.2 innings this season, in addition to registering a -3.4 RAA with his fastball. Harper has notched the second highest RAA against the heater, and has logged a .382 ISO against right-handed pitching.
