Yahoo DFS Baseball: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Sunday's 16-game MLB slate begins at 1:10 p.m. EDT and contains an extra game thanks to a Mariners-Royals doubleheader. None of the players below rank among the most expensive options at their respective positions, but their high likelihood of providing excellent returns makes them Sunday's top value plays.

PITCHER

Jose Berrios, MIN vs. TEX ($43): Berrios has been tremendous in his six home starts, pitching to a 2.61 ERA while allowing just one homer and six extra-base hits in 41.1 innings. That success coupled with opposing starter Nick Martinez's struggles make Berrios likely to nab a win against a Rangers lineup that ranks 29th in road OPS at .689. Texas also strikes out the sixth-most at 9.12 times per game and Berrios has no trouble racking up whiffs with a 21.9 percent strikeout rate.

Lucas Sims, ATL vs. MIA ($29): Sims is worth the gamble at just $4 over the minimum, as the 23-year-old righty likely won't stay this cheap for long. He logged a quality start in his MLB debut against the Dodgers last Tuesday, and the 2012 first rounder also brings plenty of strikeout upside after posting a 28.1 percent strikeout rate at the Triple-A level prior to his call up. Miami's offense scores 0.33 fewer runs per game than the Dodgers do, so the better matchup should allow Sims to have the kind of performance that drives his price up for good.

CATCHER

Mike Zunino, SEA at KC ($12): Zunino's power gives him a higher ceiling than the typical $12 catcher, especially with southpaw Danny Duffy on the mound for the Royals. Duffy's been dominant against lefties, but he has surrendered a .328 wOBA to batters from the right side. Meanwhile, Zunino has a .337 wOBA in that split after posting a .368 mark last year, and his 16 homers in 81 games this season show that he's always a threat to go deep. Just make sure to double-check that you use him in the right game, as the Mariners and Royals will be playing a double-header after Saturday's game was postponed.

FIRST BASE

Matt Carpenter, STL at CIN ($19): Carpenter is 17-for-29 lifetime against Reds starter Homer Bailey, and it's hard to imagine that effectiveness declining with Bailey in the midst of his worst season. The veteran right-hander has basically turned every left-handed hitter he faces into Carpenter, allowing a .361 wOBA that's right in line with the slugger's .365 mark in that split. Batting leadoff should also puts Carpenter in the best position to maximize at-bats and runs in what promises to be a productive game for St. Louis' offense fueled by Great American Ballpark's ninth-ranked 1.06 park factor.

SECOND BASE

Kolten Wong, STL at CIN ($11): While his history against Bailey isn't as extensive as Carpenter's, Wong has found equally incredible results with a .500/.667/.750 line against the righty. Bailey's 7.32 ERA and 1.86 WHIP suggest there should be plenty of offense to go around for the Cardinals, and Wong's serviceable .336 wOBA against righties is more than enough to warrant an $11 investment given the hitter-friendly conditions.

THIRD BASE

Nicky Delmonico, CWS at BOS ($8): Delmonico has been Chicago's best player at the plate in this series, going 5-for-9 with five RBI in the first two games. That's an impressive output for a recent call-up that had just two MLB games under his belt coming in. His inexperience is unlikely to keep Delmonico's price low for long, especially with more production likely to come in this matchup with Doug Fister, who has allowed a .429 wOBA to left-handed batters.

SHORTSTOP

Freddy Galvis, PHI at COL ($17): Rockies starter Jeff Hoffman comes in with a 7.04 ERA through eight home starts, which isn't surprising given Coors Field's top-ranked 1.31 park factor. The switch-hitting Galvis will have the platoon advantage here while hitting from his preferred side. Galvis' wOBA from the left is .062 higher than his right-handed mark, putting him in position to capitalize on the hitter-friendly conditions while batting second in the order.

OUTFIELD

Andrew McCutchen, PIT vs. SD ($24): McCutchen has scorched left-handed pitching with a .492 wOBA in 102 plate appearances, and he just mashed four homers in three games when these teams met in San Diego a week ago. That success should carry over at home against Clayton Richard, who has surrendered at least four earned runs in six of his past seven starts while allowing a .391 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season.

Jim Adduci, DET at BAL ($11): With Alex Presley (oblique) on the DL, Adduci is the only left-handed hitting regular on the Tigers besides switch-hitter Victor Martinez. Martinez has struggled against right-handed pitching with just a .300 wOBA this season, but Adduci's .350 mark shows that he doesn't have the same issue. As a result, the affordable outfielder offers the best bang for the buck in this lineup against Ubaldo Jimenez, who has allowed a .412 wOBA to batters from the left side.

Eddie Rosario, MIN vs. TEX ($14): Rangers starter Nick Martinez was called up last week due to a lack of pitching options following the Yu Darvish trade and promptly got lit up for seven runs by the Mariners. Bouncing back won't be easy at Target Field, which ranks third with a 1.18 park factor. Rosario has taken advantage of his home park's hitter-friendly conditions, mustering a .413 home wOBA against right-handers with nine home runs in 125 at-bats. If Martinez's .372 wOBA allowed to left-handed batters is any indication, he'll be one of the easier matchups Rosario will face this year.
