FanDuel MLB: Monday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Monday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

The weather continues to be an issue, so pay attention to the forecasts throughout the day. Luckily, MLB has been kind to DFS players and scratched most of the postponed games early enough in the day that lineups could be adjusted.

The games start Monday at 1:05 PM EST, but the main slate which will be discussed has a 7:07 PM EST start and features nine games. There are no aces on the mound tonight, so filling a lineup with stud bats will be pretty easy. It'll just be a question of figuring out the right combination.

For those interested, we've started an MLB DFS Slack channel for paid RotoWire subscribers. (There is a season-long one as well.) To join those channels, e-mail support@rotowire.com.

PITCHER

Mike Clevinger, CLE at LAA ($7,700): Clevenger comes in with the fourth-highest salary among pitchers tonight and has a great shot at scoring the most fantasy points. He gave up only a .265 wOBA on the road last season, leading to a 2.45 ERA, and struck out over a batter per inning. In his third season in the majors he could be primed for a breakout and has an above-average offense backing him up.

Also consider: Chad Bettis, COL at SD ($6,300)

GPP Fade: Matt Harvey, NYM vs PHI ($7,000): The allure of Harvey at this point is his name and the potential he once had. Don't be fooled into using him until he shows he's close to being back to his old self. He didn't break double-digit fantasy points in any of his last four games last season, and the Phillies feature a more potent lineup than they did in 2017.

Cheap GPP Consideration: Brian Johnson, BOS at MIA ($5,700): Most of the potent bats (Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna) against left-handed pitching have left town, and overall the Marlins appear to be a weak-hitting team. Johnson had respectable numbers in the minors last season, and in limited work for the Red Sox in 2017 managed a complete-game shutout against the Mariners.

CATCHER / FIRST BASE

Paul Goldschmidt, ARI vs LAD ($4,400): Goldschmidt should be an auto-play at home for cash games against a soft-tossing lefty in Hyun-Jin Ryu. Goldschmidt had a .442 wOBA last season at home against left-handed pitching, so this is merely a reminder to get him in your cash lineup.

SECOND BASE

Yoan Moncada, CWS at TOR ($3,300): Moncada has gotten off to a nice start this season, reaching base in both of his games and hitting a home run as well. Jaime Garcia split time between three teams last season and saw both his K and BB rates head in the wrong direction. A mediocre pitcher at best pitching in a hitter's park, Garcia will also have to contend with Moncada's speed on the base paths.

THIRD BASE

Rafael Devers, BOS at MIA ($3,100): Devers seems to be the forgotten man in the Boston infield at the moment given how hot Xander Bogaerts has been out of the gate. Tonight the Red Sox play in Miami and face Trevor Richards, who has never pitched above AA ball. A Red Sox stack makes a lot of sense, and Devers will have the lefty vs righty advantage against Richards.

SHORTSTOP

Marcus Semien, OAK vs TEX ($3,000): Semien has been hitting in the top part of the lineup and has an excellent matchup tonight against the Rangers. Texas will send 44-year-old Bartolo Colon to the mound, a pitcher who had a 6.48 ERA last year along with a 1.59 WHIP. This matchup is all about Colon, who gave up a .373 wOBA to right-handed batters on the road last season.

OUTFIELD

Jay Bruce, NYM vs PHI ($3,100): Bruce has reached base safely in his first three games and has been hitting third in the lineup. In a limited sample last season (27.2 innings) opposition pitcher Ben Lively allowed a .368 wOBA to left-handed hitters on the road, walking more batters (12) than he struck out (nine). Meanwhile Bruce had a .369 wOBA against right-handed pitching last season and owns a .349 mark for his career.

Carlos Gonzalez, COL at SD ($2,900): The Rockies had enough faith in Gonzalez to not only bring him back, but to have him hit in the cleanup or fifth spot in the order. With Trevor Story's struggles to start the season it would make sense for CarGo to stick in the cleanup spot, especially after he put together a .390 wOBA over the second half of the season in 2017. Bryan Mitchell will take the mound for the Padres, a pitcher who posted a 5.79 ERA with the Yankees and an extremely low 11 percent strikeout rate. Despite being in Petco Park, this is a good matchup for Gonzalez.

UTILITY

Anthony Rendon, WAS at ATL ($3,500): Rendon was an absolute lefty-killer last season with a .461 wOBA against that handedness, a number that went up to .510 on the road. Sean Newcomb struggled in his rookie season, giving up 1.57 WHIP that suggests his 4.32 ERA was a bit lucky, so there could be a few more bumps in the road for him this season.
