STARTING PITCHER
Cole Hamels, TEX vs. TOR ($45): Hamels had a somewhat disappointing, injury-riddled campaign last year, but he's looking to bounce back strong. So far, the results have been a little mixed, but he's struck out 18 batters in 10.7 innings. Toronto only managed 693 runs last season, 26th in the majors. The Blue Jays also only had a .240 batting average, second-lowest in the bigs. Also, since it's not summer yet, the ball is less likely to be flying out of the Rangers' ballpark.
Tyler Mahle, CIN at PIT ($36): We don't have a ton of data to draw on when it comes to Mahle in the big leagues, but what we do know is encouraging. In 20 innings last season he posted a 2.70 ERA, and the 23-year-old blanked the Cubs over six innings and struck out seven in his first start this year. Last year, the Pirates only had a .386 slugging percentage, so if they hit Mahle, they may not do it for much power.
CATCHER
Jorge Alfaro, PHI vs. MIA ($10): Yes, Alfaro has struggled this season, but it's only four games. Don't worry about that too much. Just last year, in what was admittedly also a small-sample size of 29 games, he posted a slash line of .318/.360/.514. Miami's starter Trevor Richards has one MLB game to his name, and he allowed five runs in 4.3 innings. At this price, Alfaro doesn't have to do much to be a nice value.
FIRST BASE
Hanley Ramirez, BOS vs. TAM ($17): Last year was a down campaign for Ramirez, but even so he still managed 23 homers in 133 games. He was also hurt by a .272 BABIP, well below his career average of .322. The 34-year-old has hit pretty well this season, and Tampa Bay is so shorthanded in the pitching department they don't have a starter decided on for Sunday. The Rays have talked about having their bullpen handle games, but do they have the talent in their relief corps to handle that?
SECOND BASE
DJ LeMahieu, COL vs. ATL ($18): Like a lot of Rockies players, LeMahieu has better numbers at home. He's also done a great job of getting on base the last few years, as his three-year OBP average is .381. Atlanta's Julio Teheran has a career FIP of 4.09, and he's recently been prone to giving up homers. He allowed 1.48 home runs per nine innings last year and has given up four dingers already in two starts this season.
THIRD BASE
Miguel Sano, MIN vs. SEA ($19): Power is the name of the game for Sano. In 316 career games, he's tallied 202 home runs. He also had a .604 slugging percentage against southpaws last year. Mariners starter Marco Gonzales is left-handed — you do the math.
SHORTSTOP
Manny Machado, BAL at NYY ($15): It seems odd to see Machado priced so low. We're talking about a shortstop in his prime who has a slash line of .279/.337/.502 over the last three years. He's hit at least 33 homers in each of his last three campaigns, as well. The Miami-born masher has also hit lefties a little better than righties.
OUTFIELD
Aaron Judge, NYY vs. BAL ($25): You may have heard Judge hit 52 home runs last season. Thirty-three of them came at home, and 44 were against right-handed pitchers. This game is at Yankee Stadium, and Mike Wright Jr., Baltimore's starter, is a righty. Also, Wright Jr. has a career 5.16 ERA and has allowed 1.63 homers per nine innings.
Justin Upton, LAA vs. OAK ($17): Upton enjoyed a resurgent campaign last year, posting a slash line of .273/.361/.540. He also averaged 30 home runs over the last three seasons and is a threat to steal the occasional base. Oakland starter Kendall Graveman has a career ERA of 4.20 and FIP of 4.46, and this season he's already allowed four homers in 10 innings.
Avisail Garcia, CWS vs. DET ($15): Detroit's starter in this game will be Mike Fiers, who is making his first start of the season after coming off the DL. He's gotten increasingly worse over the last four seasons, and last year he had a 5.48 FIP. Garcia, meanwhile, is coming off a breakout campaign where he slashed .330/.380/.506. Granted, his .392 BABIP indicates he may not do that again, but he's off to a good start this season.
