Yahoo DFS Baseball: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Sunday's MLB slate starts at 1:05 PM ET, so you'll have to get your daily fantasy lineup in early if you want to have the option to use players from all 30 games. Here are my recommendations.

STARTING PITCHER

Mike Soroka, ATL vs. SFG ($43): Soroka came into this season as a vaunted prospect and impressed with his debut start against the Mets. He only allowed one run in six innings and struck out five, earning another start in the process. This time he gets to pitch at home, and the Giants don't have much punch in their offense. They are in the bottom 10 in runs scored to start this season, and ranked 29th last year.

Andrew Triggs, OAK vs. BAL ($33): Triggs only has 24 starts to his name, but he has a 3.83 FIP that is decent, if not remarkable. However, this is a potentially a rather favorable matchup for him. The Orioles are off to a terrible start offensive, as they rank 29th in runs scored. They also have a .225 batting average. Getting to pitch at home in Oakland's ballpark could also help Triggs out. At this price, he could prove to be a fine value.

CATCHER

Tucker Barnhart, CIN vs. MIA ($13): Barnhart got Saturday off, but he'll likely be back in the lineup for Sunday. His .346 OBP is on pace with his .347 OBP from last season, but his .224 batting average is a little lackluster. That being said, his .266 BABIP is likely to improve. Dan Straily, Miami's starter, has developed a real problem with allowing homers He's allowed 1.46 homers per nine innings on average over the last three seasons, and he gave up two more dingers in four innings in his lone start this year.

FIRST BASE

Joe Mauer, MIN at CWS ($18): Mauer doesn't hit for a ton of power, but he puts the bat on the ball with gusto. He has a career slash line of .308/.391/.442, and he hits righties better than lefties. Not that it's hard to hit James Shields at this point. The 36-year-old is on pace to finish with an ERA above 5.00 and a WHIP about 1.40 for the third season in a row. Plus, though Mauer doesn't hit many homers, Shields gives up a ton of them. His HR/9 rate the last three seasons is 1.78.

SECOND BASE

Jonathan Villar, MIL vs. PIT ($10): Villar has struggled to get on base, or hit for power, but he does have a .277 batting average. He also has six stolen bases and had 23 last year (and 62 the season prior). When he gets on base, he's always a threat to swipe a bag. Pittsburgh's Chad Kuhl has a career 4.39 ERA and 4.25 FIP, and it won't take Villar much to prove worthy of this price point.

THIRD BASE

Todd Frazier, NYM vs. COL ($18): Frazier has no problem hitting for power, as he's tallied at least 27 homers in his last four seasons. He already has five this year, and has the best OBP of his career up to this point of the season (a small sample size, admittedly). Kyle Freeland has a career FIP of 4.49, and weirdly he's a Rockies pitcher that has been worse on the road than at home. He's also a lefty, and Frazier has hit for more power against southpaws.

SHORTSTOP

Andrelton Simmons, LAA at SEA ($18): There was a time when a hitter facing Felix Hernandez would be a reason to ignore them. That is no longer the case. King Felix has a 4.89 ERA and 5.32 FIP and his fastball is the slowest it has ever been. Simmons is off to a hot start, and last season he had 14 homers and 19 stolen bases. It's unlikely he is going to turn cold against the struggling Hernandez.

OUTFIELDER

J.D. Martinez, BOS at TEX ($24): Martinez unexpectedly broke out last season with 45 home runs and a .690 slugging percentage. He's hitting even better to start this season, albeit with slightly less power. Additionally, though he hit lefties better than righties last season, he's hit right handers just fine over the last couple of seasons. Though Doug Fister has a 2.88 ERA through five starts, his 4.20 FIP tells a different story. He hasn't had a FIP below 4.00 since 2013, and pitching in Texas as the weather warms up isn't likely to help.

Corey Dickerson, PIT at MIL ($20): Dickerson doesn't have much of a split, but he's hit for more power against righties. On that front, he's hit at least 24 home runs in his last three full seasons. Chase Anderson has a 3.38 ERA, but a 5.80 FIP, on the season. Overall, his career FIP is 4.34. What's driving his inflated FIP this year? He currently has a .211 BABIP and has allowed eight homers in 40 innings.

Franchy Cordero, SDP vs. LAD ($15): For starters, bear in mind that this game isn't taking place within the pitching-friendly confines of Petco Park, but in Monterrey, Mexico. That changes the calculation a bit. Cordero has averaged 7.7 fantasy points per game this season, probably largely due to the six homers he has already. The 23-year-old has only played in 51 MLB games, so we don't know a ton about him, but he is showing that he has some potential. Rich Hill is scheduled to start this game, but he's coming back from a finger infection, so he might not be on top of his game.
