Brown qualifies as a center based on his days with the Hornets, but he won’t be needed there this year. Ben Wallace will play center leaving power forward open for Brown – and for Mike Sweetney. For the Hornets in 2005-06, Brown wore down in the second half prompting a decrease in minutes (34.0 mpg pre-All-Star break, 27.2 mpg post-All-Star break). He’ll be 37 when the season starts, so age will be a factor, but no one questions how hard he works on defense. Brown’s just an average offensive player, but is deadly from the free-throw line.
Another year, another 11-point, nine-rebound season for P.J. Brown. Few players are more consistent than the 35-year-old who has brought similar stats to the table pretty much every year of his 12-year career. He'll shoot for a decent percentage, will give you about a steal and a block per game, and will provide veteran leadership for a young Hornets club. Veteran leadership doesn't do much for your fantasy team, unfortunately: Brown probably has another year or two left of contributing at his current level (a level that can help you in a deep fantasy league or as a short-term injury replacement), but don't look for much more upside here.
Most of the things P.J. is good at - tough defense, veteran leadership - don’t show up in box scores. And he'll lose some playing time this season to second-year man David West. But he's a very safe bet to give you a near double-double every night.
With a new four-year contract worth $40 million, New Orleans knows the value that Brown brings to the team. Brown is a solid PF, who will give consistent performance every night. Not only does he rebound, but he also has a solid fg and ft percentage, which is very rare for a big man. Brown is good at everything, but not spectacular at anything, making him an under-valued player in many leagues.
