Desmond Mason: Waived by Kings
FSacramento Kings
November 5, 2009
Mason was waived by the Kings on Thursday, the Kings' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The Kings replaced Mason in the starting lineup with Andres Nocioni Wednesday night and signed Ime Udoka on Thursday. Mason struggled to find his groove, and the signing of Udoka made him more than expendable. He could be claimed off waivers by another team, but it's unlikely he'll go anywhere that increases his fantasy value.

Mason arrived in Oklahoma City in the offseason as part of a three-team trade. But whether it is a sweet homecoming for Mason, who played college ball at Oklahoma State, remains to be seen. His defensive acumen is highly valued, but his spot in the rotation is in question as the team has a glut of shooting guard/small forward types. His offensive opportunities likely will be limited, and he isn't one to fill up the stat sheet at any rate (he shot just 65.9 percent from the line last year). Mason's in the last year of his contract, which could mean a trade or reduced minutes if the team doesn't believe he's in the rebuilding plans. Even if Mason is a part of the future, he'll likely have to fight for minutes behind Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green.
Mason saw an increase in playing time last season and responded with a solid year. The Bucks would like to use Mason as a sixth man off of the bench, and they love his defense. He does have a chance to beat out Bobby Simmons and start at small forward, but it's more likely that he'll come off of the bench and average around 20-25 minutes per game at both small forward and shooting guard.
Mason joined the Hornets last year injured and as the backup shooting guard, but he ended the year as the starter. Mason has great athletic skills, using his quickness and leaping abilities to get to the basket, but he doesn’t have much of a shooting touch. The addition of Peja will hurt Mason’s scoring, dropping him to 4th option in the offense. Mason should put up 11-12 points a game and he won't contribute in many other areas.
Mason, a tremendous athelte who can jump out of the gym, has the potential to be a good option for points and rebounds, but he'll have to fight with Keith Van Horn and Toni Kukoc for minutes at the three. Mason will also spell Michael Redd at the two on occasion, but Redd won't come out of the game all that often. In sum, Mason might only average 25-30 minutes per game, and while he'll produce decent deep-league numbers with that kind of floor time, he'll need a Van Horn or a Redd injury to really help your team.
The Bucks traded for Mason halfway through last season and he started at small forward or shooting guard. Mason's production should go up now that the Bucks have traded away most of their team.
