Novak was waived Thursday by the Bucks, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bucks acquired Roy Hibbert and Spencer Hawes from the Hornets on Thursday in exchange for Miles Plumlee, and they'll waive Novak in order to free up a roster spot to accommodate the new additions. Novak, a Milwaukee-area native, hasn't been a regular contributor this season, appearing in only eight games and logging just 22 total minutes. The 32-year-old will likely consider retirement, but it's possible he could look to find another NBA home, though he hasn't been a rotational player in nearly three years. Since leaving the Knicks in 2013-14, Novak has bounced around between the Raptors, Thunder (twice). Jazz and Bucks (twice).

After being traded from the Jazz to the Thunder at the trade deadline in February, Novak averaged 1.2 points, 0.8 blocks, 0.5 rebounds, and 0.4 assists in seven minutes per game for the Thunder in his 11th NBA season. His strength is three-point shooting, with a 43-percent career three-point mark, but the forward was on the bottom of the Thunders' depth chart and struggled to get on the court. He might be even further down the depth chart this season with All-Star Kevin Durant and powerhouse Serge Ibaka getting most of the minutes at the forward spots. While Novak's role on the Thunder this year is unclear with the entrance of new head coach Billy Donovan, his value is expected to continue to be minimal unless the team suffers a litany of injuries. At 31 years old, Novak is one of the older players on the team. He'll serve as veteran depth this season, but it's unlikely he plays enough to be of use in most fantasy leagues.
Steve Novak was traded to the Jazz in the offseason and will spend his ninth year in the league as a three-point shooting role player in Utah. He was a member of the Raptors' playoff squad last season but was only utilized in 54 games. While merely given 10 minutes per game last season, the Marquette product averaged just 3.3 points, 1.1 rebounds, 0.2 assists, 0.2 steals, 0.1 blocks, and 1.0 three-pointer while playing both small forward and power forward. Unfortunately for the 30-year-old, things don't look much brighter in Utah with Gordon Hayward and rookie Rodney Hood at small forward and Enes Kanter and Trevor Booker at power forward. Novak's most important role with the team may ultimately be mentoring Hood, who proved to be a major threat from beyond the arc in the Las Vegas Summer League. Considering that Novak's only asset on the court is shooting threes, he may be in for a long season of mentorship.
Novak has just one skill, shooting threes, and he was exposed in extended minutes with the Knicks last season. Sent to Toronto as part of the Andrea Bargnani deal, he should see fewer minutes as a pure sharp-shooter off the bench but could be more effective in terms of shooting percentage in the more clearly-defined role.
Novak bounced around to five different teams over his first six years in the league, and his deficiencies on defense always limited his role. With the Knicks starved for perimeter shooting and in need of their bench players to step up in the wake of injuries last season, Novak was finally given extended floor time. He averaged 8.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, 0.3 steals, and 2.5 three-pointers in 19 minutes per game last season. After seeing sporadic action in the first two months of the season, Novak was made a regular part of the rotation in February. Though his overall statistics were underwhelming, Novavk’s contributions in three-pointers made him a superb complimentary player in fantasy. When the Knicks’ roster is healthy, Novak’s role will probably be scaled back, but as long as he’s converting his three-pointers near the ridiculous 47 percent clip he did in 2011-12, Novak should be of use in a range of fantasy formats.
Novak is an elite perimeter shooter, who connected on 34-of-71 from beyond the 3-point line for the Rockets last season and averages 42.7 percent for his career. He doesn’t play a lot of defense, which usually limits a guy’s playing time, but Novak could get more minutes with the Clippers than he did with the Rockets. Los Angeles was next-to-last in the league in 3-point percentage, so there’s a need for the skill he brings.

Novak will battle Scott Padgett for the role of three-point shooting power forward - something that the Rockets will go to once in a while to make more space for Yao Ming.
