Gee joined the Pelicans this summer on a two-year deal after playing for the Nuggets and Trailblazers a year ago. In 54 games between his two teams, Gee averaged 12 minutes, 4.5 points, 1.1 rebounds, 0.5 assists, and 0.6 steals per game while connecting on 13 of his 35 three-point attempts. Still just 28 years old, Gee could carve out a role in the Pelicans rotation at some point this season thanks to all the injury problems that usually plague New Orleans but will likely be behind at least Norris Cole and Quincy Pondexter in the pecking order to begin the season. Gee has never been a prolific three-point shooter and has struggled to the tune of 70 percent from the free-throw line each of the past two seasons. With Alvin Gentry as the new head coach in New Orleans, Gee may see more opportunities from beyond the arc than he has in previous season.
The NBA's Carmen San Diego, Gee was seemingly on a different team every week this summer. In a matter of two months, Gee was technically a member of the Cavaliers, Pelicans, Rockets, and Kings, bouncing around as a throw-in in various trades. The latest of such trades happened in late-August, sending Gee and some unguaranteed deals to the Kings in exchange for Jason Terry. Whether Gee will open the season on the Kings' roster is entirely unclear, but the veteran is almost guaranteed to find a spot somewhere in the league. He's 26 years old and just two years removed from averaging 10.3 points and 3.9 boards while starting all 82 games for the Cavaliers. Last season, however, he saw his minutes cut in half, and his production shrunk to 4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 65 games (24 starts). While he's not a great fantasy producer – Gee shoots a low percentage and rebounds at a below-average rate – he could be a valuable bench asset for many teams, and where he ultimately plays this season will go a long way toward determining his value.
It's hard not to admire the former undrafted free agent who bounced around the NBA in 2009-10 and 2010-11. He made appearances with the Wizards and Spurs before latching on with Cleveland. However, if Gee is a team's starting small forward and plays 31 minutes per game, that team is likely not going far. Gee should come off the bench in 2012-13 and provide perimeter defense, but he will almost assuredly not score in double digits again.
After spending his first two NBA seasons being something of an afterthought on the bench, Gee finally earned regular, significant playing time last season, and he was able to make the most of it. Gee finished the season with averages of 10.6 points, 5.1 boards and 1.3 steals in 29 minutes per game. He posted surprisingly few blocked shots (0.3 per game) for someone with his length and athleticism. He also shot just 41.2 percent from the field, but that number is somewhat distorted by what turned out to be a horrible final month of the season for Gee, where he made just 34 percent of his shots. It’s also logical to assume that Gee’s three-point shooting improves in his second year as a key cog for Cleveland. Last season he attempted 2.2 shots per game from downtown, connecting on 32 percent. There’s certainly plenty of upside here, assuming Gee still sees significant minutes. He’ll be competing for minutes at the three with C.J. Miles, so it would be a boon for his perspective owners if he can win the starting job.
Another of Cleveland’s young backups, Gee is a slasher who gets to the rim. He will not see enough court time to be fantasy-worthy.
Gee was named the NBDL’s Rookie of the Year last season, with 21.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game on 51 percent shooting for the Austin Toros. Those numbers should earn him a spot on San Antonio’s roster this season, but he faces an uphill climb for fantasy-worthy playing time.
The undrafted free agent was an All-SEC Second Team player at Alabama. He's a long shot to win a reserve guard role.
