Neal's career started in the stable atmosphere of San Antonio. He spent three seasons coming off the Spurs' bench before bouncing around the league for the last two years. Neal started the 2013-14 season in Milwaukee with stops since in Charlotte and Minnesota. He joined the Wizards in the offseason on a one-year contract. In 54 games with the Hornets and Timberwolves last season, the 30-year-old averaged 10.1 points, 0.9 three-pointers, 2.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 0.4 steals in 22 minutes per game. Neal hit just 37 percent of his shots from the field, but hit 87 percent of his free throws. His three-point conversion rate of 31 percent was a career-low and lowered his career percentage from long range to 38 percent. The 6-4 guard scored at least 20 points four times, including a season-high 27 points with the Wolves in a Mar. 7 win over Portland. With the depth in the Wizards' backcourt, Neal may be hard-pressed to get as many minutes as he has throughout his career (22 per game over his five seasons), but he could have a few big and surprising games for the Wizards.
Acquired mid-season, Neal was immediately put to use for his outside shooting. In fact, 35 percent of his attempts for the Bobcats were from the three-point line, and that will be his primary role again this year. At some point, logic says he will be pushed aside for P.J. Hairston, who arguably offers a few more dimensions, but that probably won't happen this season. Regardless, he's a 20-minute role player.
After a helping the Spurs to the Finals, the Bucks inked Neal to a two-year, $6.5 million deal in July. He’ll space the floor with his three-point shooting off the bench but is not likely to provide much in terms of assists or rebounds.
Three-point specialist could get minutes at either guard spot, but given the Spurs' overall depth and de Colo's arrival from Spain, he could also end up racking up quite a few DNPs.
In his second season with the Spurs, Neal will take on a more prominent role following the trade of George Hill. He’ll be counted on to provide an offensive spark off of the bench, and while he did average 1.6 three-pointers in 21.1 minutes a game last season, his fantasy value is limited since he doesn’t provide much in any other category.
