ANALYSIS
Johnson joined Trevon Duval as the second Herd guard to miss Monday's game, but the likes of Xavier Munford and Robert Johnson filled in admirably, combining for 38 of the team's 115 total points. Johnson has been an immediate starter for the Herd, averaging 36.7 minutes in 14 games with the organization after leaving Austin in February.

The Nuggets decided to ship off Ty Lawson to the Rockets this offseason, and Johnson is one the pieces Denver picked up in the deal. The Arizona product is entering his second season in the NBA after playing very little as a rookie. In 28 games with the Rockets, Johnson averaged just nine minutes per game, putting up 2.6 points and 1.4 rebounds per game while shooting 35 percent from the field. After being buried deep on the Houston depth chart last season, Johnson will likely again struggle to find consistent minutes. Rookie Emmanuel Mudiay and veteran Jameer Nelson will be Denver's top two options at point guard, and Randy Foye can also play on the ball, meaning Johnson will likely be relegated to a deep bench role for much of the season. However, as Denver enters somewhat of a rebuild, Johnson could have a chance to prove he belongs in the rotation if new coach Mike Malone decides he'd rather play the young guard instead of Nelson behind Mudiay.
Johnson comes to the Rockets as an intriguing prospect out of Arizona, who had a solid NBA summer league experience. He finished the summer league season averaging 13.4 points over the span of 15 games. Johnson demonstrated his ability to do more than just score, when he exploded for a triple-double 15-point, 10-assist, and 10-rebound game, but it's left to be seen what Johnson will be able to do against stiffer competition. Not all too common for a second-round draft pick, Johnson will have the opportunity to carve out an extended role with the Rockets this season. With the departure of Jeremy Lin this offseason to the Lakers, and the anointing of Patrick Beverley as the starting point guard, Johnson will have a chance to gain a roll as a backup point guard. He'll have to continue to impress the coaching staff, but if he's able to out play Isaiah Canaan and the newly acquired Jason Terry, Johnson may get a bunch of playing time. He'll also be a backup to James Harden at the shooting guard position, but again, that's if he can impress the coaching staff come the season's start and show himself as reliable as those ahead of him.
