Wiliams (knee) was released by the Warriors on Thursday, Anthony Slater of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams was one of the few training-camp invitees viewed as a serious contender to win a 15-man roster spot, but his bid was undone by a knee scope that kept him off the court for the entire preseason. Once healthy, Williams will likely have to restore his stock in the D-League, where he was one of the top players on the circuit a season ago.

Michael Carter-Williams has a great opportunity to be the most valuable on a destitute team. He was a top-15 player in head-to-head leagues last season, but can he improve his efficiency to be better in rotisserie?

In his third season, Williams played 13 games, splitting time with both the Jazz and Pelicans on separate 10-day contracts. In 13 games, he averaged 2.8 points, 0.6 rebounds, 0.9 assists, and 0.3 steals in nine minutes per game, shooting 38 percent from the field, 44 percent from downtown, and 25 percent from the free-throw line. In 29 games during 2014-15 with the Santa Cruz D-League team, Williams posted 21.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.2 steals in 36 minutes per game. Williams, who has only appeared in 104 career games, has a non-guaranteed contract and will likely go toe-to-toe with Aaron Harrison for the Hornets' final roster spot in 2015-16.
Elliot Williams is entering his third season in the NBA. As a sophomore with the 76ers, he averaged 6.0 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.6 three-pointers made in 17 minutes per game through 67 games played. He shot 42 percent from the field on 5.0 attempts, 73 percent from the free-throw line on 1.8 attempts, and 30 percent from three-point territory on 1.9 attempts. Williams is average height for his position, but he is underweight. There's plenty of opportunity available for 76er shooting guards and small forwards, as no player holds a clear lock on those starting roles. With that said, however, due to his size, Williams is only really in consideration as a guard, and the arrival of Alexey Shved and Casper Ware adds depth to the guard positions that didn't exist in 2013-14. If Williams can again earn the amount of playing time he saw last season, he should have value in some deep leagues as a strong per-minute scorer and rebounder.
The sky-walking Williams will miss the season after tearing his left Achilles tendon during a September workout.
The high-flyer was the 22nd-overall selection of the 2010 draft. He injured his right knee in November 2010, underwent surgery, and missed all of his rookie season. While the situation was unfortunate, Williams is still buried on the depth chart at shooting guard behind Matthews and Batum and is not likely to have value in most fantasy league formats this season.
Williams was the 22nd overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, out of Memphis. His defensive reputation is good, but, at 6-4, he profiles as a shooting guard, and that's where Brandon Roy currently plays.
