ANALYSIS
Fredette recently left the Greek club Panathinaikos. In his 45 appearances there, he averaged 13.2 points on 8.0 shots, 2.4 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 20.2 minutes per game. Fredette is 31 years old and has also spent time in China and the G League. It wasn't very long ago that Fredette was draining shots from 35 feet out in the NCAA tournament. Now, he looks to be a long shot to gain valuable minutes on any team. Fredette was in need of new scenery after last season, where he averaged 3.6 points, 0.2 three-pointers, 0.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 0.3 steals in 10 minutes per contest through 50 games. Fredette is a victim of his small stature. He plays like a shooting guard but barely has the size to play poitn guard in the NBA. With the Pelicans last season, when starting point guard Jrue Holiday suffered a season-ending leg injury, Tyreke Evans was moved to the point, and the Pelicans acquired Norris Cole and Toney Douglas to backup Evans ahead of Fredette. His efficiency was at an all-time low in 2014-15, shooting 38 percent from the field, and 19 percent from three, which is the most reputable facet of Fredette's game other than his 96 percent free throw shooting. The Spurs are willing to give Fredette a shot at salvaging his NBA career, though it will not be easy as he will have to share minutes with Tony Parker, Patty Mills, and Ray McCallum at point. Unless he is used as a shooting specialist on one of the deepest teams in the league, it will be very hard for Fredette to gain a foothold on the Spurs this season as they chase the Larry O'Brien trophy. Ultimately, he may not even make the team, as Fredette's contract is non-guaranteed.
Fredette will be playing for his third team in four NBA seasons when he takes the court for the Pelicans this season. The former Naismith College Player of the Year winner struggled to see the court last year, playing 49 games between the Sacramento Kings and Chicago Bulls. In 11 minutes per game between Sacramento and Chicago, Fredette averaged 5.6 points, 1.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 0.3 steals while shooting a blistering 48 percent on three-point attempts. That mark was actually better than his 47 percent clip on all field goals. The lethal shooter should get an opportunity to earn playing time this year without a clear backup to Jrue Holiday in place. Austin Rivers and rookie Russ Smith can both make claims to replace the departed Brian Roberts, but Fredette's shooting from deep could make him an interesting piece for coach Monty Williams considering Anthony Morrow is now a member of the Thunder and Ryan Anderson is a question mark as he returns from neck surgery. Fredette may also see time this season off the ball. Though Fredette lacks prototypical size for a shooting guard, having the 6-4 Holiday at point guard should be able to make up for Fredette's relatively diminutive stature if Williams decides to go use the two of them together.
Things do not look good for the one-time loveable college sharpshooter. Fredette's already strong shooting improved in his second season, but his minutes and production numbers decreased. The drafting of Ben McLemore and the acquisition of Greivis Vasquez make Fredette a very low priority for the Kings. His best case scenario is a trade to a different bad team with a shallower backcourt (since he would remain unlikely to play on any good team).
Fredette turned out to be what everyone expected him to be during his rookie season; an under-sized downtown threat with glaring defensive deficiencies. We will likely see more of the same from Fredette this season, with the signing of Aaron Brooks further solidifying his role as a reserve player.
Fredette could very well end up being the Tim Tebow of basketball. He led underdog BYU to the NCAA Sweet 16 last year; but analysts had many questions about the young point guard coming into the draft. Is he athletic enough? Can he play NBA-level defense? Well, what we do know about the kid is that he can shoot. He exhibited range from beyond the NBA arc in college and will be a good source of three-pointers. His teammates are already praising his passing ability as well. Coach Westphal has indicated that Fredette will be the first guard off the bench, seeing around 15-20 minutes per game.
