Griffin had an inconsistent season that leaves his role for 2006-07 in doubt. He won the starting center job at one point last year and had several double-digit rebound games. He seems a poor fit for the T-Wolves because his best assets are his ability to score (especially outside for a big man) and block shots, but the T-Wolves need him to focus on hitting the boards and playing around the basket. If he gets playing time, he'll get blocked shots and rebounds. However, don't expect him to return to 60+ three-point attempts from a few years ago which really made him a valuable center. The T-Wolves have better talent from the outside (especially if Troy Hudson is healthy) and want him to focus on defense. Yet another turbulent offseason away from the court (A lawsuit was filed against him after a car wreck last season in which he hit a parked vehicle and was alleged to be watching pornography while driving.) shows any hot stretch is at risk for non-playing reasons.
Griffin revived his career with the T-Wolves after missing the entire 2003-04 season because of ongoing legal battles and substance abuse issues. Griffin should get major minutes at power forward and even at center. He could average nearly 2 blocks per game while also contributing a surprising number of three pointers for a big man. In his second year with Minnesota he could fight for a larger role and is a sleeper.
Will try to get his career back on track in Minnesota. Should see a few minutes per game at both forward spots should he make the team.
Griffin is a big-time talent who hasn't been able to put it together. That said, with Kenny Thomas now playing in Philadelphia, Griffin only has to hold off flat-tire Maurice Taylor to solidify his claim on the starting power forward spot. If Griffin can see 30 minutes per game, he'll be an excellent source of blocked shots from the forward position, and everything else is a bonus -- including some three pointers. Grffin will miss some of training camp after minor surgery to remove loose particles in his right knee in September.
