Jones came over from Portland in the deal that brought Zach Randolph mainly because his salary helped make the deal work. He’s not a great shooter so he has his limits as a shooting guard. He’s comfortable going to the basket, but there will not be enough playing time for him to make use of his skills.
Jones has some impressive physical tools off the wing, but his skills were never fully utilized in the Pacers’ system. When John Salmons backed away from signing with the Raptors however, Jones found a new home north of the border. He’ll compete with Anthony Parker for the starting shooting guard spot and with Morris Peterson for minutes between the two and three, but he figures to be a big part of coach Sam Mitchell’s rotation no matter what his role is to start the season. If he can find his shots in the new offense, 12+ points and 100+ three pointers is well within his abilities.
In many organizations, Jones would be primed to step into a starting role, after he averaged nearly 30 minutes per game last year and saw Reggie Miller retire after the season. Instead, with Ron Artest returning, Stephen Jackson will move over to the shooting guard spot, with Jones assuming a backup role. Look for his playing time to drop, even though his performance could improve. Jones' situation is illustrative of the Pacers' depth, and the issues that could ensue.
Jones improved considerably in his second season in the NBA over his rookie year, tripling his playing time in the process. Don’t expect him to make the next leap up just yet, however. A shoulder injury suffered in the playoffs required surgery over the summer, limiting his ability to work on his game. By midseason, however, look for Jones to start playing about 20-25 minutes per game, as he continues to eat into Reggie Miller’s playing time.
Jones didn't show much in his rookie season with the Pacers, although in fairness he didn't get too many opportunities. If it weren't for his guaranteed contract, there'd be a very real danger that his roster spot would be in jeopardy. He's not quick enough to play the point, and his defense is suspect - never a good thing in coach Rick Carlisle's system.
