Taft only played in 17 games last year due to chronic back problems and is already on the shelf this year with an inflammatory condition that causes weakness and stiffness in his muscles. At this rate, he will be lucky to make the Warriors opening day roster.
After averaging 13.3 points and 7.5 boards as a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh last year, Taft fell to the Warriors at the 42nd pick of the second round. Once projected as a lottery pick, his stock plummeted after poor pre-draft camp performances and questions about his work ethic and intensity surfaced. At 6-10, he has good size and athleticism, but will most likely learn from the bench this year. He will start the season third on the depth chart at power forward behind Troy Murphy and Ike Diogu.
Taft has the rare combination of size, athleticism, and strength that makes him a highly touted player coming into the draft. He has a good post game and has great shot selection. On the downside, Taft isn’t in great physical shape and scouts question his heart and desire. Based on potential Taft could be a mid-lottery pick but his stock has been falling because scouts have questions about his motivation.
