Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
2014
Brown has served in a limited role for the Nets over the last two seasons, appearing in 109 games and averaging 5.3 points and 2.0 rebounds. After declining his player option for 2016-17, Brown became an unrestricted free agent, but failed to land a guaranteed deal. He eventually settled from a training camp contract with the Cavaliers and will try to claim the 15th spot on the roster. While the 24-year-old is an excellent athlete and strong defender, he's a 38.2 percent shooter from the field for his career, while hitting less than 30 percent of his three-pointers.
Brown is a 6-3, 190-pound undersized shooting guard that the Nets have tried to convert into a point guard. Through 47 games in his rookie season, he averaged 4.6 points, 0.4 three-pointers, 2.3 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.3 blocks in 17 minutes per game. A confluence of mediocrity on the Nets roster last season allowed Brown to get 29 starts, averaging 5.9 points, 0.4 three-pointers, 3.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.0 steal, and 0.4 blocks in 23 mpg. Even if those stats were extrapolated to the typical 30-or-so minutes that a player has to receive to collect enough stats to be relevant in fantasy, Brown would fall short of being useful. Even through nine games at the summer leagues in Orlando and Las Vegas, Brown struggled, averaging 12.4 points, 1.2 three-pointers, 3.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.6 blocks in 24 mpg. Essentially, no matter how you cut it, Brown's production wouldn't be good for fantasy even if he had a significant role. It's hard to even see a way that he could be of use in daily games at some point. Leave him undrafted in most leagues.
The explosive rookie out of Oklahoma State was selected by the Timberwolves with the 44th overall pick in June's draft and promptly traded to the Nets. Brown was a stellar four-year player for the Cowboys, starring alongside Marcus Smart in 2013-14. As a senior, Brown averaged 17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists while shooting 47 percent from the field and 38 percent from three. One of the top pure athletes in the 2014 class, Brown recorded a 43.5-inch vertical leap at the NBA Draft Combine. Couple that with a nearly 6-9 wingspan and 8-4 standing reach and Brown has the makings of an elite defender at the pro level. At 6-4, Brown projects to see most of his minutes at shooting guard, despite dabbling as a point guard in college. He'll compete with Alan Anderson, Jarrett Jack, and Bojan Bogdanovic for playing time in the Brooklyn backcourt.
