PGA Tour Stats Review: Entering the BMW Championship

PGA Tour Stats Review: Entering the BMW Championship

This article is part of our PGA Tour Stats Review series.

This week the PGA Tour moves to Denver for the BMW Championship, the third leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Only the top 30 in points move on to Atlanta and next week's Tour Championship. And once again, history means nothing.

History Lesson

Ever since the changes to Chicago's Cog Hill aggravated all the players, this tournament has been on a rotation of sorts, trying to find a permanent home but also going to some other markets. This year is one of those years, as the PGA Tour returns to Denver, and Cherry Hills Country Club. So as a result, recent event history means nothing.

However, Phil Mickelson, who looks uninterested at times but did shoot a final-round 67 at the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday, won his U.S. Amateur title there in 1990. So if you believe Phil will get inspiration from the soil, he may be one to pick.

Who's Playing Well

The interesting thing about the final DBC leaderboard is that the three Americans who finished near the top - Chris Kirk, Billy Horschel and Russell Henley - all don't scream MUST fantasy picks. But they are hot, and in the 2014 playoffs when you're playing four consecutive weeks that may be enough of a swaying factor.

Our pick is Horschel, who seemed very upbeat after his chunked second shot on 18 into the hazard that negated a chance at victory. Stats wise, he was T7 in greens in regulation, ninth in strokes gained-tee to green and

Bubble Boys

Of the players on the bubble this week, our picks are:

Brian Stuard -
Stuard fired off a final-round 68 on Sunday at the DBC, moving him up 15 spots in the points standings to 49th. For the week he finished fourth in strokes gained - putting.

Chesson Hadley -
Hadley closed up the week at TPC Boston by finishing T9 and moving to 57th in the standings. A player with nothing to lose who ranked who ranked T9 in strokes gained - total, he could be a strong sleeper this week.

Morgan Hoffmann -
Hoffmann continues his playoff points rise, this time ending the week 68th in points. Although his play wasn't up to his standards, finishing in a tie for 35th, the man who ranked 35th in strokes gained-total this week is a good pick as he has absolutely nothing to lose.
