The Marlins have selected Hock with the 119th overall pick in the 2017 first-year player draft.
Analysis
A stint as a starter in the Cape Cod League sent Hock up the draft boards, but upon his return to Stanford, he returned to a relief role, tempering some of the excitement. The collegiate right-hander sits in the low 90s with his fastball and largely relies on his curveball as his out pitch. He does have a changeup in his repertoire, but he rarely used it this past season in his relief role. His high-effort delivery created some control problems in the past, but most scouts think that teams will likely be able to help him refine his mechanics. His 6-foot-4, 220 pound frame could help him transition into a starting role full-time, although a late-inning relief role is not out of the question if he can find an extra gear on his fastball.
