Houston assigned Matthews to Low-A Fayetteville coming out of spring training, but he's spent the entire campaign on the affiliate's 7-day injured list while continuing his recovery from the Tommy John surgery he underwent prior to signing with Houston as an undrafted free agent following the abbreviated 2020 first-year player draft. Now that he's back to pitching in games in rookie ball, Matthews appears to be nearing the finish line in his lengthy rehab from the elbow injury. He's unlikely to make an appearance for Fayetteville before its season ends Sunday, but Matthews looks on track to head into 2022 spring training at full health.
