NFL Training Camp Notes: Darnold Starting?

Monday saw reports that the Jets' first-round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft might have a shot to win the Week 1 job after all, and the Patriots cut a wide receiver.

  • Adam Schefter tweeted that "Sam Darnold 'has a very fair shot' of winning Jets' starting QB job for regular-season opener, per sources. He has to keep progressing, preseason will be critical, and he probably is a year away, when he turns 22." To recap, Darnold could start Week 1 this but is probably a year away. Alrighty, then. This means Josh McCown isn't guaranteed to be the starter against the Lions but given his veteran status and familiarity with the personnel and offense, he seems like the logical choice. Still, expect to see Darnold at some point this season.
  • Malcolm Mitchell, mired by injuries during his brief NFL career was released from the Patriots despite a good showing in Super Bowl LI when he had six catches for 70 yards. His early release should allow another team to take a flier on him. The signing of Eric Decker added another wide receiver to the Patriots' depth chart making Mitchell an expendable piece.
  • It was revealed that the trade bringing Corey Coleman to the Bills cost them only a seventh round pick begging the question "did the Browns get enough?" With other teams such as Dallas and Seattle having multiple question marks at wide receiver it would seem another team should have been able to do better than a seventh round pick for a player taken in the first round of the 2016 draft. Coleman has had issues hanging onto the football but when not injured and on the football field showed the ability to create separation and get open downfield. He should be able to quickly work himself into a significant role among the Bills' wide receivers. Antonio Callaway worked with the Browns' first team and likely stands to gain the most with the departure of Coleman.
  • Joe Flacco, Baker Mayfield, and Mitch Trubisky will all take the field in the respective preseason games Thursday. This will be the first preseason action for the three quarterbacks and all are worth considering in any preseason DFS contests.
  • Sammy Watkins is dealing with a minor hip injury. For now it appears to be nothing serious and he's set to open the season opposite Tyreek Hill as the Chiefs' No.2 wide receiver.
  • After missing the Packers' Family Night scrimmage Saturday, Randall Cobb returned to practice Monday. His absence from the scrimmage was "just managing the soreness" according to Cobb and his presence at practice Monday seems to indicate that's true.
