Labour Day weekend always delivers some of the CFL's most anticipated matchups, and this year's slate is no exception.
With rivalry games taking center stage, the betting board features several intriguing opportunities, from a passing prop involving the league's hottest quarterback to a divisional total that could turn into a shootout and a touchdown wager backed by one of the CFL's most productive running backs.
Here are my top three bets for Labour Day.
BC Lions
vs. Montreal Alouettes
- Davis Alexander over 311.5 passing yards, -114 @ FanDuel
Few quarterbacks have been more reliable this season than Davis Alexander, and this passing-yard total feels well within reach as he'll be facing the Lions, who average 303.6 passing yards per game, the fourth-worst mark in the CFL this season. Alexander continues to lead one of the CFL's most explosive offenses, and his 3,657 passing yards in 11 games lead all quarterbacks in the CFL.
Alexander also leads all signal-callers in QB rate (125.3) and his 6.7 TD percent ranks second in the league, trailing only Vernon Adams Jr., who opened the second in a record-setting pace from a TD:INT perspective. Alexander has failed to surpass the mark of 260 passing yards in his last two appearances, but this game is expected to be competitive enough to see the Alouettes rely on their passing game time and time. This feels like a great bounce-back scenario for the star signal-caller.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders
- Over 57.5 points, -105 @ BetMGM
Labour Day meetings between Winnipeg and Saskatchewan are often physical, but both offenses enter this rivalry game with enough firepower to push the total into the 60-point range. Saskatchewan still features an aggressive passing attack led by Trevor Harris, while Winnipeg's offense revolves around Brady Oliveira's ability to establish the run before creating opportunities downfield, as well as the presence of Zach Collaros under center. And that's without mentioning talented wideouts such as KeeSean Johnson (990 receiving yards), Kian Schaffer-Baker (704), Tim White (699) and Ontaria Wilson (686).
The Roughriders rank fifth in total yards this season (408.9), and the Blue Bombers are seventh (355.7), and the average scoring combined from both teams so far this season has been 57.9 total points. At 57.5, the number is certainly high, but the offensive talent on both sidelines makes the over the preferred angle.
Edmonton Elks
vs. Calgary Stampeders
- Justin Rankin anytime touchdown scorer, -150 @ FanDuel
Rankin has developed into the centerpiece of Edmonton's offense, making him one of the most dependable anytime touchdown options in the CFL. Whether the Elks reach the red zone through Cody Fajardo's passing attack or by controlling possession on the ground, Rankin is almost always the first option near the goal line. Rankin not only passes the eye test, as the numbers back him up as well -- he ranks second among RBs in rushing touchdowns with eight, trailing only Zander Horvath's 13.
His combination of vision, power and explosiveness has made him one of the league's most productive backs, and Edmonton has shown a willingness to feed him in short-yardage situations. Calgary has struggled to consistently slow opposing rushing attacks this season, and they're allowing 114.3 rushing yards per game, the second-worst mark in the league, creating another favorable matchup for Rankin. The star tailback should be one of the safest touchdown bets of the week.
