College Football Picks: Clemson vs. Miami Best Bets

The Miami Hurricanes (4-0) will visit Memorial Coliseum for a conference battle against the Clemson Tigers (2-1), a matchup that will affect the race for the ACC Championship. The contest is a primetime event at 7:30 p.m. ET, and there's a slight chance weather could impact the game, as potential thunderstorms are in the forecast for Saturday evening.

Clemson vs. Miami Betting Odds for Week 5

Spread: Miami -15 (BetMGM), Clemson +15.5 (FanDuel Sportsbook)

Total: Over 47.5 (BetMGM Sportsbook), Under 48 (BetRivers)

Moneyline: Miami -700 (BetMGM Sportsbook), Clemson +550 (Fanatics Sportsbook)

Surprisingly, betting metrics haven't moved much. Money flowing to the under has driven down the total a bit, and the tricky spread for this game has seen late money for Clemson, pushing the spread down to where it is currently.

Clemson vs. Miami Betting Picks for Week 5

Making this pick depends on a couple of factors, and you'll get different answers depending on who you ask. Is this spread too large for a high-octane Miami squad entering a hostile road environment? Also, have the Hurricanes played a defense of consequence that can handle the offensive onslaught?

There's no doubt that an objective look at the scenario would favor the home underdog, and in another season, it might hold water, but the current editions of these two teams severely skew that narrative.

The only argument we can make for a home underdog pick is that the Tigers will try to run the ball, control the clock, and limit possessions. The points given would represent about 30 percent of the projected points in this contest, and if the Tigers execute that plan perfectly, Miami's ability to win by two touchdowns is hampered. But the key word here is 'perfectly'.

Despite surging to 2-1 after getting thrashed by LSU, the Tigers rate near the bottom of the FBS in just about every offensive metric you can think of. They have shown they can move the ball on the ground, but if the Hurricanes force Tait Reynolds to move the ball with his arm, it's going to be a long evening in Death Valley. Despite the weak competition, the Hurricanes have a clear talent advantage on offense, and although Clemson's defense will be Miami's toughest test yet, I don't see the Tigers scoring enough points to keep up.

I project Dabo Swinney's seat to get hotter as he suffers a defeat that might not be as bad as the opener, but it will still be decisive.

Clemson vs. Miami Predictions for Week 5

Heisman contender Darian Mensah's numbers have been nothing short of spectacular. He's thrown 14 touchdowns against zero picks and has completed an astonishing 88.7 percent of his passes. Much of his success is due to Malachi Toney, one of the most electrifying pass-catchers in the country. The Hurricanes aren't limited to excellence through the air, as Mark Fletcher and Javian Mallory have combined for 465 yards and six rushing touchdowns.

For the Tigers, superlatives are mostly limited to the defense, which is littered with NFL draft picks like Will Heldt, Sammy Brown, and Ashton Hampton, who is one of the best cornerbacks in the country. Offensive success will depend on two things: Gideon Davidson's ability to establish the run game and an improved passing effort from Tait Reynolds. If one or both of these factors can't be achieved, a blowout is very likely.

Clemson vs. Miami Player Props for Saturday, October 3

QB Tait Reynolds, Clemson, Under 184 Passing Yards (Underdog, FanDuel)

Reynolds has only exceeded this number once against UNC, and it depended on a couple of breakaway plays. He only threw for 108 yards against Cal last week, and Miami's defense is much tougher.

WR Cooper Barkate, Miami Over 3 Receptions (Betr)

Clemson's secondary will key in on Toney, leaving Barkate open and available. A look back to the Clemson-Duke game last season also favors this pick, as Mensah connected with Barkate six times for 127 yards and a touchdown. I also like the Over 36.5 receiving yards for Barkate, which is readily available on PrizePicks, FanDuel, Betr and Caesars.
