College Football DFS: Week 2 Saturday Night Picks and Strategy for DraftKings and FanDuel

As usual, we have a slight difference in the slates available on DraftKings and FanDuel for Week 2's Saturday evening football action, so we'll tackle the shared game first and play cleanup with what's left at the end of the article.

CFB Week 2 Night Slate Overview for Saturday, September 12

The massive point spreads are still afoot in Week 2, and it's difficult to pin down how much work certain favored stars will get. Take Darian Mensah, who put together an excellent two quarters on Thursday but was pulled very early, losing all of that potential production and making him a bit less valuable. It's rare to see anyone pulled as early as Mensah was, but you're essentially depending on a solid first half if you're angling for someone like Sam Leavitt or Will Hammond on this slate. One game I'm not fond of is the marquee matchup between Ohio State and Texas. I fear it will mirror last year's low-scoring defensive matchup, limiting what we can get from the game DFS-wise.

Week 2 Saturday Night Weather Report

TENN/GT - slight chance of rain

NAVYFAU - 46 percent chance of rain

LT/LSU - slight chance of rain

TTU/ORST - 55 percent chance of rain

College Football DFS Week 2 Night Picks for Saturday, September 12

Quarterback

This slate is best with a QB in the Superflex.

Faizon Brandon, Tennessee (DK $8,000, FD $11,500) @ Georgia Tech

The Vols have designed runs in place for Brandon, and he was able to use his legs for two touchdowns in his college debut. This is mostly a DK-only play for me, as I think he's too expensive to risk at $11,500. If I want the dual-threat effect on FanDuel, I'm far more likely to opt for Nico Iamaleava (DK $7,700, FD $9,900), who has shown improvement so far after a lackluster first season with the Bruins.

Caden Veltkamp, FAU (DK $7,300, FD $9,700) @ Navy

This game has a hefty 58.5 Total prediction, the highest on the slate. Weather is a concern, but if it holds up, I think Veltkamp is a decent bet despite the potential blowout. He stayed in for the entire game last week despite a sizeable lead, so there's hope that he'll play well into the second half.

Running Back

Wayne Knight, UCLA (DK $7,600, FD $8,800)

Anthony Woods is banged up and questionable to play, so I suspect Knight will take on a larger load if he's limited. If the game is close, Knight will probably log a full four quarters, and although Jaivian Thomas is still on the roster, Knight will likely dominate the touches.

Kamari Moulton, Iowa (DK $6,600, FD $10,200) vs. Iowa State

This is an amazing price for Moulton on DraftKings, and I can't see how you fade him here. While LJ Phillips was supposed to share snaps with Moulton, he's now on the shelf with an ankle sprain, and the staff seemed fine with going exclusive with Moulton for most of the game, resulting in 183 yards and two touchdowns. Iowa State is a much tougher opponent than NIU, but Matt Campbell poached the Cyclones and took some of their best players to Penn State, making the offense a lot less certain.

Wide Receiver

Easton Messer, FAU (DK $6,100, FD $8,300) vs. Navy

Messer is poised for another great season at FAU, and I don't mind stacking him with Veltkamp. However, if you need salary cap relief, Veltkamp gave Kelby Valsin (DK $4,800, FD $7,500) 15 targets last week, and he took full advantage of them.

Devin McCuin, Ohio State (DK $5,900, FD $7,700) @ Texas

I don't want to ignore this matchup entirely. My plan all along was to take the best bargain wideout I could find between the two teams and take a chance on him, and I settled on McCuin because Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo were more expensive, and a third option for Texas didn't seem as feasible. McCuin looked like the solution for Carnell Tate's departure alongside Jeremiah Smith last week, and I predict most of Texas' secondary will put the heat on Smith, leaving McCuin in a few one-on-one matchups that he can win.

Jordan Allen, Georgia Tech (DK $5,000, FD $7,200) vs. Tennessee

While I didn't take Alberto Mendoza, I think we'll see improvement and continued ability to get the ball to Allen, who caught eight of 10 targets for 113 yards last week. The Vols aren't slouches on defense; I see the potential for Mendoza to surprise with a decent line in this matchup.

DraftKings-only Targets

Louisiana Tech @ LSU

He'll be very popular, but I see the logic behind leading off your lineup with Sam Leavitt ($8,500). He isn't overly expensive, and I don't see Lane Kiffin taking his foot off the gas until late in the game. The result will be another excellent line from Leavitt, and you have to keep him in mind over on DraftKings. I see nothing alluring for Louisiana Tech, and LSU's health of weapons and deep bench preclude me from hammering other Tiger positions.

The massive point spreads are still afoot in Week 2, and it's difficult to pin down how much work certain favored stars will get. Take Darian Mensah, who put together an excellent two quarters on Thursday but was pulled very early, losing all of that potential production and making him a bit less valuable.
