Boyd completed 31-of-40 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns in Friday's Orange Bowl against Ohio State. He added 20 rushes for 127 yards and a touchdown.

ANALYSIS
Boyd was picked off twice but was otherwise nearly perfect against an over-matched defense. Boyd's Clemson career ends in style, and he should be a mid-to-late round selection in this year's NFL Draft.

Although he was inconsistent in his first two years at Clemson, Boyd really took his game to another level in 2012, and a similar showing should be expected of him in 2013. Boyd proved to be an exceptional combination of athleticism and downfield passing ability last year, running for 514 yards and 10 touchdowns while throwing for 3,896 yards (9.1 YPA), 36 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 13 games. He should benefit from aggressive playcalling in 2013 as Clemson attempts to turn him into a Heisman candidate, and with Sammy Watkins to throw to at receiver, the departure of first-round NFL draft pick DeAndre Hopkins shouldn't hurt Boyd much.

Boyd didn't receive the most positive reviews this time last year, but when the games started he proved up to the task. Much more than that, in fact – he finished the year with 3,828 yards and 33 touchdowns passing in 14 games while running for 218 yards and five more scores. He proved he's a top talent nationwide in 2011, and his receivers – particularly Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins – are among the best in the country. He's probably a justifiable top-eight selection among quarterbacks.

Boyd is a former big recruit for Clemson who is unproven heading into this year. His upside is quite high due to the Tulsa-style offense the team figures to install this year, but it's tough to know at this point whether Boyd is up for the challenge. He's a high-risk, high-reward target this year.

Boyd was expected to stay on the bench for 2010, but it looks like he'll be taking over in light of Kyle Parker's selection in the first round of the MLB Draft. Boyd was a consensus top-five quarterback recruit from 2009, so high expectations are warranted despite his complete lack of experience at the college level. Look for his 2010 number to be modest, however, because Clemson has two effective runners to lean on in Jamie Harper and Andre Ellington.
