After starting the majority of games his first two seasons in West Lafayette with mixed results, Blough wound up splitting time under center with sophomore Elijah Sindelar in 2017 due to a mix of injuries and good play from the two signal-callers. In his limited time, Blough posted a career-best 65.0 completion percentage and 7.03 yards per attempt. Sindelar missed spring practice after undergoing ACL surgery in December, allowing Blough to get increased reps during the session, but the two are expected to compete again in fall camp. It wouldn't be surprising if second-year coach Jeff Brohm employs the committee approach under center again in 2018, potentially limiting Blough's upside.

  2. David Blough 2016 Preseason Outlook
Blough began the year behind junior Austin Appleby, but persistent struggles from Appleby resulted in head coach Darrell Hazell changing horses in late September. Aside from a strong (29-39, 340, 2,1) outing against Bowling Green, Blough struggled to figure out Big 10 defenses. He completed just 55.7 percent of his passes in conference games for 1,223 yards, eight scores, and seven picks. On the bright side, Blough can move a decent bit, even if his total rushing yardage output doesn’t reflect it due to yardage subtracted by sacks. Furthermore, he averaged 35.1 passing attempts per game in conference play last season, and given that Purdue will likely be trailing a lot of the time against Big 10 competition, we could see some gaudy passing numbers purely thanks to volume.
