A South Alabama spokesman said Monday that Mayo left the football team prior to spring practices in March, Richard Holden of NBC 15 News Mobile reports.

News of Mayo's departure from South Alabama didn't appear on the radar until he was involved in an apparent road-rage incident Monday in in Fairhope, Ala. and was arrested on a charge of carrying a pistol without a permit. As a junior in 2018, Mayo carried 36 times for 96 yards and a touchdown and caught six passes for 19 yards. With the 2019 campaign just over two months away and an arrest hanging over his head, Mayo seems unlikely to join another program in time for his final season of eligibility.
