San Diego State: Ronnie Hillman Declares For Draft
January 5, 2012
Hillman will enter the 2012 NFL Draft, the North County Times reports.
ANALYSIS
He's no Marshall Faulk, but Hillman is still an intriguing big-play back. He was a workhorse and one of the top runners nationwide for San Diego State the past two years, bolting for 3,243 yards (5.66 YPC) and 36 touchdowns on the ground in 26 games. The problem is Hillman played in the 180-pound range in college, and there's no way he can work as a feature back in the NFL. Still, despite his lack of size, Hillman has no shortage of intensity as a runner and isn't afraid to dive into traffic between the tackles. Given that, there's not much reason to think Hillman couldn't pay off as a change-of-pace back. Indeed, Hillman might pay off in a big way in such a role, as he can devour open-field space and explode into and past a defensive backfield as well as any back in the draft. With that said, since he lacks the features of an NFL starter, Hillman seems unlikely to be a fantasy factor down the road. We suspect he'll go in the fourth or fifth round.

2011 Fantasy Outlook
Hillman was one of the nation’s absolute best running backs as a freshman last year, burning defenses for 1,532 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground in 13 games. He averaged over 20 carries per game, and he might get even more work in 2011 now that star wideouts Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson are no longer around. Hillman is a bit of an injury worry given that he might weigh under 180 pounds, but he held up fine last year, and there’s no doubt at this point that he’s a big-time playmaker.
