NFL Waiver Wire: Week 12 Pickups

NFL Waiver Wire: Week 12 Pickups

This article is part of our NFL Waiver Wire series.

This column is geared toward "standard" 12-team leagues and based upon a $100 free-agent budget. Please, please adjust for your league based on both the number of teams (I'm in a 24-team league, for example) and budget. This column will run every Tuesday to, hopefully, accommodate the various waiver schedules. I'll update it in the comments section during the week; please keep in mind a lot can change from Tuesday to Sunday.

Players listed/discussed last week: DeShone Kizer, Samaje Perine, Jamaal Williams, Rex Burkhead, Austin Ekeler, Dontrelle Inman, Dede Westbrook, Chester Rogers and Garrett Celek.

QUARTERBACK

Secondary Targets

Matt Moore, MIA - Jay Cutler could miss time after suffering a concussion Sunday, which would mean the better Dolphins quarterback would be under center. Moore had an elite 10.1 YPA in relief of Cutler on Sunday and, more important, didn't turn the ball over. He'll have the week to work with talented wide receivers Jarvis Landry and DeVante Parker and appears to have an excellent rapport with Kenny Stills. Cutler hasn't been ruled out yet. but if he is, Moore will be a good play against the Patriots, who allow a league-high 282 passing yards per game. FAAB: $2-$4, go 3x-4x in two-quarterback leagues

RUNNING BACK

Secondary Targets

Danny Woodhead, BAL - Woodhead made it through Sunday's game without suffering any setbacks to his gimpy hamstring, finishing with five catches for 21 yards and a run for two yards. He won't get much volume in the rushing attack with Alex Collins handling that role, but Woodhead will be in on passing downs and is still one of the league's best pass-catching backs. Look for Joe Flacco to check down to him plenty during games, and his yards from scrimmage should improve from Sunday's performance. Bump him up a few bucks if you're in a full-point PPR league. FAAB: $3-$6

Chris Ivory, T.J. Yeldon, JAX - It's been a strange season for Leonard Fournette and it doesn't seem like his ankle is going to heal any time soon. That means there could be a timeshare between Ivory and Yeldon should the Jaguars decide to rest Fournette until he's completely healthy. Ivory is the preferred target as the bigger back who likely will get the goal-line work with Yeldon handling the backfield on passing downs. Watch for updates throughout the week on Fournette's status and adjust the bidding accordingly. FAAB: Ivory $3-$6, Yeldon $2-$4

Byron Marshall, WAS - A gruesome injury Sunday ended Chris Thompson's season and with Rob Kelley also out for the year, Marshall finds himself as the No. 2 running back for the Redskins behind Samaje Perine. It's likely Marshall assumes the receiving role in the Washington backfield after surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in his last season at Oregon. Perine (wrist) will handle the bulk of the workload, but Marshall is definitely on the fantasy radar. FAAB: $2-$4

Hail Mary

D.J. Foster, Kerwynn Williams, ARI - Outside of two good games, the Adrian Peterson experiment has been awful as he failed to reach 30 rushing yards in his three other starts. The Cardinals made a somewhat surprising move Monday by releasing Andre Ellington, who handled passing downs. That will open playing time for Foster and Williams in the receiving role with Peterson still working early downs. It's tough to get excited about either, but one could emerge into a bigger role, and they're both a Peterson injury away from being the starter. FAAB: $1-$2

WIDE RECEIVER

Primary Targets

Corey Coleman, CLE - Coleman, who missed seven games with a hand injury, successfully returned to the field Sunday with 11 targets for six receptions and 80 yards. While that's not the greatest fantasy day, there's good reason to think he'll be a target monster the rest of the season. No one else in the Cleveland offense is close to the talent of Coleman, and the Browns likely will play from behind as they have almost all season. DeShone Kizer hasn't turned the ball over as much lately and should continue to develop in the second half of the season. Coleman's the top waiver add this week. FAAB: $15-$25

Secondary Targets

Kenny Stills, MIA - Stills exploded for a big fantasy day against the Buccaneers on Sunday, posting a 7-180-1 line with Matt Moore at quarterback. Stills also had at least eight targets in four of his last five games before Sunday. Still, he's not listed as a primary waiver-wire target because he had a couple dud games with only 13 receiving yards in each. If Moore starts this week, Stills is worth using as a No. 3 WR or in a flex spot against the Patriots. FAAB: $3-$6

Bruce Ellington, HOU - It's uncertain how long Will Fuller will be sidelined, but Ellington will line up opposite DeAndre Hopkins as long as he's out. It's not the best matchup against the Ravens this week, but Ellington has had seven, eight and eight targets in his last three games, though Sunday was his best receiving performance with a modest 63 receiving yards. FAAB: $2-$4

Russell Shepard, CAR - The good news for Shepard is Curtis Samuel is out for the season, which bumps Shepard up a spot on the depth chart. The bad news is safety blanket Greg Olsen should return this week and be the 1B option to Devin Funchess in the passing attack. Still, Shepard is coming off a seven-target game and should be lined up opposite Funchess against the Jets on Sunday. Shepard has big-play ability, but expecting him to produce on a consistent basis is probably a stretch. FAAB: $2-$4

TIGHT END

Secondary Targets

Adam Shaheen, CHI - Shaheen made the most of his opportunity Sunday with Dion Sims inactive, finishing with four catches for 41 yards and a touchdown. Without Sims, Shaheen has seen his snap count rise to 36 and 41 in the last two games, and his performance against Detroit perhaps leapfrogged him over Sims even when he returns. FAAB: $3-$6
