This should be the easiest week of the season for lineup decisions, but that doesn't mean it's always as simple as starting whoever we drafted earliest. Young players like TreVeyon Henderson (ankle), Jadarian Price and Carnell Tate weren't necessarily taken with Week 1 in mind, nor were post-surgery veterans like Malik Nabers, George Kittle, Tucker Kraft and Alec Pierce.
We shouldn't bench our fourth-round pick for an eighth-rounder, no matter how good/bad the matchups, but there are cases where it makes sense to start a ninth-round pick over a seventh-rounder, for example. I'll touch on some of those below, highlighting the best and worst matchups of the week before getting into my top streaming picks for every position and league size.

Start/Upgrade 👍
Quarterbacks 👍
Jared Goff (vs. NO) — 29% started
Start Over — Bo Nix (at KC), Matthew Stafford (vs. SF), Brock Purdy (vs. LAR)
Skepticism will be warranted when he travels to Buffalo in Week 2, but Goff is otherwise set up beautifully early in the season. His first two home games are against the Saints (W1) and Jets (W3), followed by trips to Arizona (W4) and Carolina (W5).
Goff has averaged 20.0 fantasy points per game at home since joining the Lions in 2021, compared to just 14.9 points in road games. He'll still be startable at Arizona in a few weeks, playing indoors, but the real appeal is what he might do against the Saints and Jets in September. Just make sure to line up a different QB for Week 2 if you plan on streaming/alternating throughout the year.
- Other Good Matchups: Joe Burrow (vs. TB); Jalen Hurts (vs. WAS); Justin Herbert (vs. ARZ); Baker Mayfield (at CIN); Tyler Shough (at DET); Bryce Young (vs. CHI); Malik Willis (at LV); Cam Ward (vs. NYJ)
Running Backs 👍
Tony Pollard (vs. NYJ) — 28% started
Start Over — J.K. Dobbins (at KC), Kenny Gainwell (at CIN), MarShawn Lloyd (at MIN)
Pollard is on a bad team with a good backup, making it hard to get excited about his 2026 fantasy outlook unless he's traded or Tyjae Spears misses time. For just Week 1, however, there's more cause for optimism, thanks to a home matchup against the Jets. It's a rare opportunity for the Titans (-2.5) to play as favorites, which makes Pollard a reasonable FLEX play or desperation RB2.
Chris Rodriguez (vs. CLE) — 3% started (Deep Leagues Only)
Start Over — Jacory Croskey-Merritt & Rachaad White (at PHI); Tyjae Spears (vs. NYJ)
Rodriguez will either be the primary or secondary runner in a three-man backfield committee, with more lean weeks than plump ones unless Bhayshul Tuten is a total bust. There's obvious risk here with so much role uncertainty, but Rodriguez's presumed lack of receiving stats becomes less of a concern when the Jaguars are heavily favored (-7.5). It looks like a favorable matchup for rushing volume and touchdowns on a team level, and Rodriguez should have a decent-sized slice of that pie.
- Other Good Matchups: Omarion Hampton (vs. ARZ); De'Von Achane (at LV); Ashton Jeanty / Mike Washington (vs. MIA); Breece Hall (at TEN); Jaylen Warren & Rico Dowdle (vs. ATL); Bucky Irving & Kenny Gainwell (at CIN); Chuba Hubbard (vs. CHI); Bhayshul Tuten (vs. CLE)
No Sean Tucker + matchup w/ Bengals D = solid week 1 for Bucky Irving?
Gainwell also startable in deeper leagues. https://t.co/WvZcLcba01

Wide Receivers 👍
Chris Godwin (at CIN) — 22% started
Start Over — Carnell Tate (vs. NYJ), Marvin Harrison (at LAC), DK Metcalf (vs. ATL)
Emeka Egbuka (toe) and Jalen McMillan (knee) are gearing up to play, but that shouldn't stop Godwin from loading up on targets and slot routes against a perennially vulnerable Cincinnati defense. The favorite for Cincy's slot snaps on defense is Jalen Davis, a long-time special teamer who finally got his big break late last year. Davis held his own in the slot, but Godwin should still have the advantage when he lines up inside. The missed time for Egbuka and McMillan this summer could also work in Godwin's favor coming out of the gate.
Jalen Coker (vs. CHI) — 6% started
Start Over — Stefon Diggs (at PHI), Matthew Golden (at MIN), Alec Pierce (vs. BAL)
This is a good matchup for the entire Carolina passing game, playing at home against a banged-up Chicago defense that will be missing at least two starters (S Coby Bryant, CB Kyler Gordon) in the secondary. The Panthers have their own injury hotspot, at offensive tackle, but they at least invested in depth this offseason. Depth is less impressive at the skill positions, potentially allowing Coker to seize a target share around 20 percent as the No. 2 receiver.
- Other Good Matchups: Amon-Ra St. Brown & Jameson Williams (vs. NO); Ja'Marr Chase & Tee Higgins (at TB); Chris Olave & Devaughn Vele (at DET); Justin Jefferson & Jordan Addison (vs. GB); DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks & Makai Lemon (vs. WAS); Tetairoa McMillan (vs. CHI); Ladd McConkey & Quentin Johnston (vs. ARZ); Tre Tucker & Jalen Nailor (vs. MIA)
Tight Ends 👍
Dallas Goedert (vs. WAS) — 43% started
Start Over — Travis Kelce (vs. DEN), Jake Ferguson (at NYG), George Kittle (at LAR)
With Eli Stowers potentially a healthy scratch and Grant Calcaterra (back) starting the season on injured reserve, Goedert faces no immediate threat to his accustomed every-down role. Improved depth at WR may offset any potential volume gain from the A.J. Brown trade, but Goedert should still see his usual handful of targets per game, if not slightly more. And while touchdown regression is inevitable after last year's spike, a Week 1 home matchup with the shaky Washington defense gives Goedert decent odds to find paydirt.
- Other Good Matchups: Sam LaPorta (vs. NO); Isaiah Likely (vs. DAL); Mark Andrews (at IND); Juwan Johnson (at DET)

Sit/Downgrade 👎
Quarterbacks 👎
Patrick Mahomes (vs. DEN) — 17% started
Start Instead — Kyler Murray (vs. GB), Baker Mayfield (at CIN), Jared Goff (vs. NO)
Mahomes had a pair of three-TD games against Denver late in the 2022 campaign. Since then, he's accounted for three TDs total in four matchups, with the Chiefs scoring fewer than 20 points each time.
This time around, the implied total is a modest 43.5 — fifth lowest of Week 1 — even though both teams annually rank among the league leaders in PROE (Pass Rate Over Expectation) and dropback volume. We may actually see a run-first version of the rivalry game Monday night, considering both Mahomes and Bo Nix are coming back from major injuries. Kenneth Walker should be busy early on.
- Other Tough Matchups: Josh Allen (at HOU); Drake Maye (at SEA); Jayden Daniels (at PHI); Bo Nix (at KC); Brock Purdy (vs. LAR); Tua Tagovailoa (at PIT)
Running Backs 👎
MarShawn Lloyd (at MIN) — 30% started
Start Instead — Tony Pollard (vs. NYJ), Chuba Hubbard (vs. CHI), J.K. Dobbins (at KC), Jordan Mason (vs. GB)
A road matchup with Brian Flores' defense never looks too good, and it's even more concerning for an inexperienced RB who could lose playing time to someone like Chris Brooks on account of concerns about pass blocking or general reliability. Even if Lloyd does get his big shot as Green Bay's clear lead runner, it might be a delayed arrival for easier matchups against the Jets (Week 2) and Falcons (Week 3). My money is on a messy committee, in any case, but I'd probably harbor these same Week 1 doubts even if I were more optimistic about Lloyd in general.
- Other Tough Matchups: Christian McCaffrey (at LAR); Bijan Robinson (at PIT); James Cook (at HOU); Quinshon Judkins (at JAX); Jacory Croskey-Merritt & Rachaad White (at PHI)
Wide Receivers 👎
DJ Moore (at HOU) — 69% started
Start Instead — Luther Burden (at CAR), Parker Washington (vs. CLE), DK Metcalf (vs. ATL)
I'm admittedly biased here because Moore was my least favorite pick at ADP this summer. I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again, but even if this is one of those cases, it might take a few weeks to show. A trip to Houston is arguably the worst matchup in the league for a wide receiver, given the Texans' unmatched combination of elite coverage and pass-rushing. Moore, meanwhile, is 29 years old and coming off the worst statistical season of his career despite finally playing in a decent real-life offense. He'll see the ball more in Buffalo, but maybe not that much more.
- Other Tough Matchups: Terry McLaurin & Stefon Diggs (at PHI); Rashee Rice & Xavier Worthy (vs. DEN); Mike Evans (vs. LAR)
Tight Ends 👎
George Kittle (at LAR) — 50% started
Start Instead — Dallas Goedert (vs. WAS), Dalton Kincaid (at HOU), Isaiah Likely (vs. DAL)
Even if we could promise an every-down role, Kittle will project for his worst per-snap production in recent memory if he does indeed play. He's just eight months removed from an Achilles tear, facing a loaded Rams defense while sharing the field with Christian McCaffrey, Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel. Don't expect Kittle to be the first read on many passes, and don't expect his usual efficiency when he does see the ball.
- Other Tough Matchups: Tyler Warren (vs. BAL); Tucker Kraft (at MIN)
