The 49ers face the Rams in Melbourne, Australia for Thursday Night Football, creating an intriguing DraftKings Showdown and FanDuel single-game DFS slate. Here's a breakdown of the top plays, Captain/MVP options, values and tournament strategies.

The Rams enter as 3.5-point favorites with a 48.5-point total, giving Los Angeles the higher implied team total. The game presents an attractive DFS environment with elite options on both sides and enough injury uncertainty to create potential tournament leverage.

San Francisco has the more significant injury concerns. Ricky Pearsall and Christian Kirk are unavailable, while George Kittle and Nick Bosa are returning from major injuries. Starting defensive tackle Alfred Collins suffered a torn patellar tendon in Melbourne and is out for the season, while defensive end Sam Okuayinonu also landed on injured reserve.

Los Angeles will be without Aaron Donald, but Myles Garrett is listed as a full practice participant and is expected to play.

CAPTAIN/MVP STRATEGY

DraftKings Captain and FanDuel MVP selection is critical because the player earns 1.5X fantasy points while also costing 1.5X his normal salary.

That makes Puka Nacua $16,800, Christian McCaffrey $15,900, Matthew Stafford $14,700 and Brock Purdy $14,100 at captain on DK. Using a premium captain can dramatically affect the quality of the remaining five roster spots.

This makes the strategy about more than simply identifying the players projected to score the most points; salary-adjusted ceiling matters.

That's where the second tier becomes particularly attractive. Davante Adams costs $13,800 at captain, Kyren Williams $12,900, Mike Evans $12,300 and George Kittle $11,100. Compared to Nacua, Kittle saves $5,700 and Evans saves $4,500. Those savings can turn a speculative sixth roster spot into another legitimate scoring option.

McCaffrey and Nacua remain the premier raw-point captains, but Williams, Adams, Evans and Kittle are my preferred GPP alternatives.

Correlation should influence the rest of the lineup. Stafford as captain builds generally should include multiple Rams receivers, while a Williams captain suggests Los Angeles controls the game on the ground. Evans or Kittle captain builds naturally pair with Purdy.

GPP LINEUP CONSTRUCTION

Uniqueness should be created at the lineup level rather than by forcing bad individual plays. A lineup can contain four or five popular players and still differentiate itself through captain selection, its final value play, roster construction or unused salary.

There's no requirement to spend the entire $50,000 DraftKings cap. Leaving $500-$1,500 unused can substantially reduce duplication. Leaving even more is reasonable when the lineup still projects competitively.

With Los Angeles favored, 3-3 and Rams-heavy 4-2 constructions should be natural landing spots. A 4-2 or 5-1 San Francisco lineup provides leverage if the 49ers win, while a 5-1 Rams lineup makes sense when specifically building for Los Angeles to dominate.

Cheap options such as Xavier Smith ($200 DK), Ronnie Rivers ($400), Davis Allen ($600) and CJ Daniels ($800) can unlock multiple stars, but minimum salary doesn't automatically equal tournament value. A slightly more expensive, lower-owned player with a comparable role can sometimes create a stronger GPP lineup.

The goal is uniqueness without sacrificing probability. One lower-owned captain, overlooked value or meaningful amount of unused salary can be enough.

Quarterback

Matthew Stafford ($9,800 DK, $11,400 FD) is one of the safest building blocks because he has an outstanding collection of weapons led by Nacua and Adams, while San Francisco enters the opener with significant concerns along its defensive front.

Stafford is particularly attractive on DraftKings because he costs $1,400 less than Nacua. He's an easy fit for balanced lineups and an obvious pairing with Nacua or Adams. Stafford captain builds generally should include multiple Rams pass catchers because a ceiling performance likely requires multiple passing touchdowns.

Brock Purdy ($9,400 DK, $10,600 FD) comes slightly cheaper and provides more rushing potential. His matchup improves with Donald unavailable, although Garrett's presence creates considerably more pressure concerns.

San Francisco's receiving injuries could actually help concentrate Purdy's opportunities. With Pearsall and Kirk unavailable, Evans, Kittle and McCaffrey should account for a substantial portion of the offense.

Running Back

Christian McCaffrey ($10,600 DK, $13,000 FD) has arguably the best combination of floor and ceiling. His rushing and receiving roles make him relatively game-script independent, which is especially valuable in single-game contests.

His reception floor and touchdown equity make him one of the strongest DraftKings captain choices and arguably San Francisco's best FanDuel MVP option.

Kaelon Black ($3,000 DK, $4,800 FD) and Jordan James ($2,000 DK, $1,000 FD) remain speculative GPP plays rather than core options. Neither should be forced into lineups merely to accommodate another expensive player.

Kyren Williams ($8,600 DK, $10,200 FD) is one of my favorite tournament alternatives. The season-ending loss of Collins weakens the middle of San Francisco's defensive front, and Williams has a straightforward path to a ceiling performance if Los Angeles controls the game.

Williams is particularly interesting at captain. A Williams captain lineup tells a coherent story: the Rams lead, Williams accumulates carries and goal-line opportunities, and Stafford doesn't throw enough touchdowns to become the optimal captain.

Blake Corum ($4,600 DK, $7,600 FD) is considerably more appealing on DraftKings. He'll likely need either increased volume or a touchdown to become optimal but provides useful salary relief.

Wide Receiver + Tight End

Puka Nacua ($11,200 DK, $12,400 FD) carries the slate's highest DraftKings salary and one of its strongest ceilings. He's the obvious stacking partner with Stafford and a premier captain/MVP candidate.

The concern isn't opportunity - it's ownership and duplication. Combining Nacua captain with Stafford, McCaffrey and other obvious plays could create one of the slate's most duplicated constructions.

Davante Adams ($9,200 DK, $9,000 FD) provides an excellent alternative. He's particularly attractive on FanDuel and has enough touchdown upside to outscore Nacua despite potentially seeing fewer targets.

Mike Evans ($8,200 DK, $9,400 FD) is one of San Francisco's most interesting options. With Pearsall and Kirk unavailable, Evans should occupy a prominent role. His downfield and red-zone ability creates significant ceiling without the premium salary attached to McCaffrey or Nacua.

George Kittle ($7,400 DK, $8,200 FD) carries more risk but also offers substantial tournament upside. He's returning from a January Achilles tear and has been limited in practice, although he's trending toward playing.

The key question isn't simply whether Kittle plays - it's how much he plays. At $7,400, he's underpriced if his workload approaches normal levels, but DFS players should account for the possibility San Francisco manages his snaps. That uncertainty could suppress ownership enough to make Kittle an excellent GPP option.

Deebo Samuel ($7,000 DK, $8,600 FD) provides another mid-tier option, while De'Zhaun Stribling ($6,600 DK, $7,200 FD) needs sufficient target volume to justify his salary.

Demarcus Robinson ($3,800 DK, $5,400 FD) provides cheaper San Francisco exposure. Colby Parkinson ($3,600 DK, $5,800 FD) and Tyler Higbee ($2,600 DK, $3,800 FD) offer affordable Stafford stacking partners.

Jordan Whittington, Tutu Atwell, Jordan Watkins and Kyle Juszczyk provide additional salary relief, but cheap players shouldn't be rostered simply because they're cheap.

Kicker/DST

Harrison Mevis ($5,000 DK, $6,400 FD) benefits from the Rams carrying the higher implied total, while Eddy Pineiro ($4,800 DK, $6,800 FD) provides similar salary relief for San Francisco.

Both are useful in star-heavy constructions because they provide realistic scoring potential without requiring an extremely speculative punt.

Los Angeles Rams ($4,000 DK, $7,000 FD) are my preferred defense. Donald won't play, but Garrett is expected to be ready after progressing to full practice participation.

San Francisco 49ers ($3,400 DK, $6,600 FD) provide more tournament leverage. Bosa is expected to play, but San Francisco's defensive front has been hit hard by the losses of Collins and Okuayinonu.

BEST DFS PLAYS

Best DK Captain: Christian McCaffrey

Best DK GPP Captain: Kyren Williams

Best DK Captain Value: George Kittle

Best FD MVP: Christian McCaffrey

Best Rams Stack: Stafford + Nacua + Adams

Best 49ers Stack: Purdy + McCaffrey + Evans

Best Midrange GPP Play: Davante Adams

Best Salary-Saving Play: Tyler Higbee

Preferred DST: Rams

McCaffrey and Nacua offer the strongest raw ceilings, while Stafford and Purdy provide dependable volume. Williams, Adams, Evans and Kittle provide the most interesting DraftKings Captain leverage.

The overriding Showdown principle is simple: don't be different just to be different, but don't ignore duplication. The 1.5X Captain salary makes every dollar matter; build around a logical game script, correlate the lineup appropriately and find one or two places to separate from the field.
