The *other* Brady on the Patriots will be part of the Daniel Graham replacement committee. He'll be counted on heavily as a blocker, but Ben Watson and David Thomas will do most of the pass-catching out of the TE slot.
Brady is past his prime for fantasy consideration and it is unlikely to haul in more than 15 receptions or be effective in the red zone. However, he is still valuable to the Jaguars as a savvy blocker and mentor for Marcedes Lewis. The run game has always thrived with Brady at tight end, meaning that there may be a slight drop off in run production if Lewis unseats Brady as the starter. This will probably not happen, at least not early in the season, seeing as how the run game will be paramount to the Jaguars in 2006.
The Jaguars re-signed Brady to a one-year deal, but it’s unlikely they did so in hopes of turning back the clock to 2000 when he caught 64 passes. No, Brady is just a blocker these days. The team is still holding out hope for George Wrighster, but he must prove he’s over back injuries that limited him to four games. The most intriguing development at this position is the possibility that first-round pick Matt Jones, a quarterback at Arkansas, may be converted to tight end and/or wideout.
Brady will likely hold on to the starting tight end job for 2004, but it appears his end is coming in Jacksonville. Head coach Jack Del Rio has turned the page on the old regime, and will work more of George Wrighster into the offense.
He's with the Jaguars for now, and there was a possibility that he would be released after June 1 because of his refusal to restructure his contract. As of early June, he hadn't yet been released and the Jaguars were under the salary cap. If released, another team will sign him, and his value will depend on that team's needs at tight end. Keep an eye on where he lands and then adjust his value. He averaged 47 catches and 525 yards over the last three seasons with nine touchdowns, though the numbers are skewed somewhat by his 64, 729, 3 season in 2000.
