Will vie for a spot in the team's defensive line rotation if healthy.
Bernard will be part of the Giants formidable interior defensive line rotation along with Chris Canty, Fred Robbins and Barry Coefield. Justin Tuck will also play inside on passing downs, so it will be hard for any of the other tackles to rack up significant sack numbers.
Pencil in Bernard for 3.5 sacks -- the number he's totaled three of the last four years. His 8.5 sacks in 2005 were a fluke -- right place, right time -- as defensive tackle doesn't afford great sack opportunities. Bernard's best asset for the Seahawks is being a run-stuffer in the middle.
Bernard proved last season that sacks from a defensive tackle are flukey as he regressed from 8.5 sacks in 2005 to 3.5 sacks in 2006, the same number he totaled in 2004. Seattle's D-line was injured and ineffective last season, which hurt Bernard's numbers. With DT Marcus Tubbs healthy and DE Patrick Kerney replacing Grant Wistrom, Bernard's production could improve this season.
Bernard record 8.5 sacks last season and two more in the playoffs. That's good production, but it can't really be counted on as it came from the defensive tackle spot. Expect him to again be central to the Seahawks' defensive success.
