Caldwell (arm) was released from the Lions' injured reserve list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Caldwell's release is likely the result of an injury settlement, though that hasn't been confirmed. He was expected to make the team when he was signed back in May, but the signings of Anquan Boldin and Andre Roberts, coupled with his broken hand, made that nearly impossible, which is why he was placed on IR for the year and why the team decided to part ways with him.

Caldwell was one of many receivers looking for a prominent role in the Lions' 2016 receiver mix. He was signed as a free agent, having appeared in 54 games and caught 32 balls during the past four seasons with the Broncos. Hopeful that his experience would have given him an advantage over some of the younger wide receivers on the roster, Caldwell ultimately suffered a broken bone in one of his hands during training camp and was released by the Lions in advance of the regular season.
Caldwell was the No. 4 wideout last season, lining up behind Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders and Wes Welker, but he had a dismal year production-wise, finishing with just five catches for 47 yards, all of which came in Week 1 (two for 16) and 11 (three for 31). He’ll compete for the No. 3 spot this season, with Welker now a free agent, but second-year wideout Cody Latimer appears likely to win the job given his superior size and speed combination.
Caldwell provides dependable veteran depth for the Broncos, but it would take a rash of injuries for him to see significant snaps.
Caldwell was expected to be the No. 3 or No. 4 wideout for the Broncos in 2012 but he was active for only eight games, catching one pass for 14 yards all season. With Wes Welker joining the Broncos, Caldwell's minimal fantasy upside likely declines even further.
With Tim Tebow under center you didn’t even need to know who the second receiver on the Broncos was, let alone the No. 3. But with Peyton Manning now under center, there should be a lot more to go around in the Denver passing game. Caldwell comes from Cincinnati where he had a forgettable and inefficient 68-target season. At 6-0, 204, he has just average size, but he runs well and is quick in and out of his breaks. Veteran Brandon Stokley’s around, and Caldwell will also have to compete with tight ends Joel Dressen and Jacob Tamme for targets in addition to starters Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas.
In the mix with a slew of young receivers – Jordan Shipley, Jerome Simpson and star prospect A.J. Green – Caldwell should get a chance to compete for a starting job. Over the season’s final three games, he had 15 catches for 270 yards, and for the year he managed 9.3 YPT and 13.8 YPC. At 6-0, 194, Caldwell’s not much of a red-zone presence, but he has good speed and moves well in and out of his breaks. Of course, the Bengals quarterback situation is up in the air between Andy Dalton and Bruce Gradkowski, and its resolution will go a long way in determining whether any of Cincinnati’s receivers will be worth drafting.
Caldwell had his moments last year as the Bengals' third receiver, but at best he's a possession receiver (8.5 yards per catch), not a big play guy. With the team bringing in Antonio Bryant and Terrell Owens, he's fourth on the depth chart, holding off third-round pick Jordan Shipley.
Caldwell dealt with a number of injuries in his rookie season, limiting his opportunities to play until the final weeks of the season. His biggest impact came in the season finale and demonstrated his ability to help out in both the passing and running game. He'll also be in the mix to return kicks and punts.
Caldwell is unlikely to enter the 2008 season anywhere higher than No. 4 or 5 on Cincinnati's depth chart at wide receiver. Still, with Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh entrenched as the Bengals' top-two wideouts, there is no proven option at the No. 3 spot. Caldwell could move his way up the depth chart and be a decent option to fill Chris Henry's vacancy at some point over the course of the season.
