Hanie was cut by the Cowboys in training camp and will now attempt to look for a backup job with another organization.
Hanie is competing with incumbent Tyrod Taylor for the No. 2 quarterback spot in Baltimore. He is unlikely to win the job.
Hanie is the first line of insurance in case Peyton Manning goes down with an injury.
Hanie was inactive for a majority of 2010 before getting thrown into the belly of the beast during the NFC Championship Game after injuries to Jay Cutler and Todd Collins. Hanie came in and was very serviceable upon relief, making some chirp there could be a quarterback controversy during 2011. The fact is, Hanie is nowhere near Cutler's skill set and arm-strength. He'll spend most of if not all of his time on the bench this season, barring a Cutler injury, and even if that happened the Bears' offensive plan would likely turn ultra-conservative.
There has been talk this offseason of the Bears bringing in a veteran to back up Jay Cutler, but it looks like the team has decided to stick with third-year quarterback Caleb Hanie as their No. 2 guy. Nevertheless, as Cutler's backup in 2009, Hanie attempted only seven passes all year, and he would need an injury to Cutler to have a chance at fantasy relevance in 2010.
Hanie spent all of 2008 as the third quarterback behind Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman, save for a few games when Orton was hurt. He's expected to be the backup this year, provided he can hold off Brett Basanez. Still, the Bears hope he never sees the field.
If Hanie makes the team, he will backup Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton.
