Clemons has been released by the Cardinals, ESPN's Adam Caplan reports.

ANALYSIS
Clemons appeared in just eight games over the past two seasons, hardly occupying a meaningful place on the Cardinals' roster. While that reality makes his release rather unsurprising, the 30-year-old did put together back-to-back seasons with at least 93 tackles prior to arriving in Arizona, so it'll be interesting to see if he earns a shot elsewhere.

The Cardinals utilized Deone Bucannon, a safety in college, as a dollar linebacker in both of his seasons as a professional, and his listed backup (Clemons) has a similar backstory. Commitment to the five-plus defensive back alignment requires that the organization hold on to a higher percentage of DBs, which gives Clemons a modicum of job security, albeit as a reserve.

Clemons spent the first five seasons of his career with the Dolphins, racking up 98 tackles in 2012 and 93 more stops in 2013. After spending the majority of last year out of football, he appears to be the leader in the clubhouse for the role of fifth safety behind the untouchables in the unit (Deone Bucannon, Rashad Johnson, Tyrann Mathieu, and Tony Jefferson). So far in training camp, Clemons has garnered first-team reps in dime situations when Bucannon has moved to linebacker.

Clemons had career highs last season with 98 tackles and two interceptions in 16 games. He'll compete for a starting role again in 2013, though the Dolphins will likely add competition in the draft or free agency.

Clemons was running as the 1st team starting safety in OTAs. He will have competition during training camp but is the favorite to start the season at strong safety.

Clemons had 50 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and an interception last season so he certainly won't be at the top of anyone's IDP rankings. He will however once again be the starting free safety for Miami this season.

Clemons may be the main reason that the Dolphins decided not to offer big bucks to free agent safety O. J. Atogwe. The Dolphins believe Clemons is good enough to take over the role vacated by the release of Gibril Wilson. With Yeremiah Bell the IDP player you want in the Miami seconday, it's best to take a wait and see approach with Clemons.
