Dilfer is retiring from football, the Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Dilfer was planning to call it quits anyways, but a recent injury to his Achilles helped him make up his mind. He wasn't the flashiest quarterback around in a career that saw him throw for for 20,518 yards, but no one can take away the fact that he helped lead the Ravens to a win in Super Bowl XXXV.

Despite not playing a snap last year, Dilfer had a big impact on the 49ers by providing Alex Smith with some veteran guidance to accelerate his development. Unless Smith suffers an injury or completely regresses, look for Dilfer to have a similar one this season.
Dilfer is a solid veteran backup who was acquired from Cleveland for Ken Dorsey to mentor Alex Smith. If Smith struggles or goes down, Dilfer is still a decent quarteback, who could have a few big games, but has limited mobility, struggles to avoid the rush and isn’t a good passer when he has to move around in the pocket. If he does start, hope that the 49ers' offensive line is at full strength and operating effectively.
Dilfer is what he is – a fiery, spirited veteran leader who will hold down the fort without embarrassing the franchise until Charlie Frye is ready to take over. Dilfer has good arm strength and can throw a nice ball when he has time to set himself, but at 33 has limited mobility, struggles to avoid the rush and isn’t a good passer when he has to move around in the pocket. The Browns do have an exciting group of receivers in rookie Braylon Edwards, Andre Davis, Antonio Bryant and Dennis Northcutt, so if Dilfer gets adequate protection, he could have a couple big games.
Dilfer is a solid backup to Matt Hasselbeck, but won't see the field unless the starter goes down. If that happens, grab Dilfer, who is a quite capable quarterback.
Dilfer, who lost his starting job last year after a mid-season Achilles’ injury, is the perhaps the best backup in the league. Dilfer’s five-year-old son passed away in the off-season and Dilfer lost several weeks of rehabilitation because of the illness and death. Training camp will be the first time he has stepped on the field all offseason. He's the backup, but if Matt Hasslebeck goes down, Dilfer will step in without missing (too much of) a beat.
