Egnew was claimed off waivers by the Lions on Monday, Tom Pelissero of USA Today reports.

ANALYSIS
Egnew was waived by the Dolphins over the weekend in light of Charles Clay and Dion Sims firmly occupying the team's top two tight end positions. However, even with Brandon Pettigrew, Joseph Fauria, and rookie first-rounder Eric Ebron already in Detroit, the Lions decided to sign the 2012 third-rounder Egnew to add another option at tight end.

Egnew, who did not play a single down in 2014, was signed by the Steelers to a Reserve/Future contract during the offseason, but was subsequently cut in August.

After Dustin Keller went down with a season-ending injury in training camp last year, the Dolphins' starting tight end job was wide open, but Egnew finished the season with only seven receptions. He was eventually waived by the team in August.

Egnew only saw the field for two games last year and never touched the football. Even with the defection of Anthony Fasano, Egnew may be no better than fourth on the depth chart. He could be a candidate to be cut should a need arise at a different position.

The Dolphins drafted Egnew in the third round this year, which suggests they aren’t necessarily sold on Anthony Fasano. Egnew falls short in the blocking game, though scouts rave about his athleticism and potential as a receiver. Miami’s quarterback situation remains a work in progress, but the lack of wide receiver talent could offer Egnew a fair amount of targets.
