Calls time on career

Werner appears to have retired, Scott Horner of the Indy Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Werner was speaking on German television and revealed that his history of knee problems has left him unable to perform at the level required by NFL teams. Although he's still just 26 years old, that reality has caused Werner to call time on his career. A first-round pick in 2013, Werner made 38 appearances for the Colts, registering 81 tackles and 6.5 sacks, before joining the Jaguars only to be released prior to this season.

Werner was given a starting role last season with Robert Mathis sidelined and had four sacks in the first seven games. However, his performance faded as he didn't register another sack in the final nine games and he wasn't even active for the AFC Championship game. A shoulder injury may have been a factor in the second half. With just 6.5 sacks in two seasons, the 2013 first-round draft pick looks like a bust, but he's been plagued by injuries.
Werner is the leading candidate to start at linebacker when Robert Mathis misses four games for failing the league's drug policy. Werner was a disappointment last season as the first-round draft pick had a hard time cracking the lineup in his rookie year and had just 18 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The Colts will need him to improve as a pass rusher with Mathis out.
Werner, the Colts' first-round draft pick in 2013 out of Florida State, will work at outside linebacker. He may not start immediately, but he will be groomed to fit in the 3-4 defense the Colts installed prior to 2012.
