McDonald worked out for the Falcons on Tuesday, freelance NFL writer Howard Balzer reports.
ANALYSIS
McDonald recently was released by the Dolphins before the season due to a crowded safety room, and, as evidenced by this news, has been receiving interest elsewhere. It's unclear if anything materialized from the tryout, but the 28-year-old played 14 games last season, compiling 86 tackles (63 solo) and three interceptions with the Dolphins.

Entering season three of a four-year contract with the Dolphins, McDonald has established himself a regular member of the team's secondary alongside fellow safety Reshad Jones. A hard-hitting box safety who plays up to his 6-2, 223-pound size, McDonald should see the field on the majority of Miami's defensive snaps but could lose some work to the versatile Minkah Fitzpatrick. It's worth noting that McDonald missed the final two weeks of the 2018 season due to an ankle injury and has yet to be officially cleared, but it's reasonable to speculate that the 28-year-old will be ready to go Week 1.
McDonald showed fairly well in his first season as a Dolphin, racking up 45 tackles, three pass breakups and an interception in eight games played. By the end of the season McDonald seemed to have established himself as the starter alongside fellow safety Reshad Jones, but the Dolphin's secondary position looks more precarious following the selection of Minkah Fitzpatrick at No. 10 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. The offseason figures to feature strong competition between Miami's secondary group, but McDonald should have no issue earning a role somewhere within the Dolphin's defense. With a 6-2, 223-pound frame, it wouldn't be surprising to see the 27-year-old take rotational snaps in a big-hitter role in 2018.
McDonald finished the 2015 campaign on IR, and subsequently got himself into legal trouble over the course of the offseason. Though healthy, he is likely facing suspension, but may still be eligible to play at some point in 2016. Through 11 games last year, McDonald finished as the 90th ranked defensive back in fantasy scoring.
Big and athletic at 6-2, 217, McDonald quietly enjoyed a breakout season last year with triple-digit tackles. With no noteworthy safety additions in St. Louis following a 980-snap season, McDonald is locked into a three-down role again this year. Although he's more of an in-the-box safety than a playmaking threat, McDonald could stumble into some interceptions this year (one last year) behind one of the league's best front sevens that should have quarterbacks throwing under duress all season.
McDonald missed six games with a fractured leg in 2013 but still tallied 53 tackles, a sack and an interception. He's slated as the starter to begin 2014, but there are a couple rookies coming in that could push him.
Rookie TJ McDonald is expected to slide into the starting free safety role for the Rams.
