The Panthers released Edwards on Thursday, the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
In four seasons with the Panthers, Edwards played an important role in the defensive tackle rotation, yet he logged just 34 percent of the defensive snaps in 2015, picking up one sack among 14 tackles in 12 games. Considering the 34-year-old's salary would have amounted to $2.1 million for the upcoming campaign, general manager Dave Gettleman will instead scour free agency or the draft to restock the defensive front.

With 40 tackles and four sacks last season, Edwards is expected to provide a fantastic backup option at defensive tackle for the Panthers once again this season.
Edwards has started 17 of 25 games at defensive tackle since joining the Panthers in 2012, totaling nine sacks along the way. However, following 52 tackles in 2012, Edwards played just 11 games last year and posted only 19 stops. Further, with Kawann Short impressing as a rookie last season, Edwards will sacrifice further playing time this season, severely restricting the 31-year-old's IDP value.
Edwards will start at DT again for the Panthers in 2013. He posted 52 tackles and six sacks in 14 games last season, making him a DL3 in most IDP leagues.
Edwards is a good tackler for a defensive lineman - he's had 109 in his last two seasons with the Bills in just 27 games - but with the new talent the Bills have brought in he'll be relegated to a reserve role. He's also not as much of a fit in the new defense as others. Edwards is not worth your time from an IDP perspective this season.
A hamstring injury limited Edwards to 11 games last year, but he was an IDP steal up to that point. He finished the year with 57 tackles (31 solo), putting him on a 16-game pace of more than 80. A huge number of those were assists, and only three were for a loss; so Edwards wasn't dominating, but that means little to IDP owners. The Marcell Dareus selection (third overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft figures to threaten Spencer Johnson rather than Edwards, so expect Edwards to secure a starting DE spot in Buffalo's 3-4 defense.
Edwards has a chance to start at DE in the Bills' new 3-4 defense, as it looks like it'll be two of Edwards, Marcus Stroud and Spencer Johnson, with Stroud looking like the best bet of the three. It's worth noting, however, that Edwards is not a great pass rusher and has never had more than one sack in a season. The best thing working in his favor is his familiarity with the 3-4 defense.
Edwards will back up Trevor Pryce at defensive end in 2009.
Edwards could see a lot of snaps in 2008 if Trevor Pryce continues to struggle with injury as he did last season. Don't expect much of an IDP impact otherwise.
Edwards is the primary backup at defensive tackle.
Might lose playing time following the Ravens' selection of Haloti Ngata in the first round of this year's draft.
Backup defensive tackle, should play more than he did during his rookie year.
