Cook was released by the 49ers on Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Cook, whose 2014 season came to an end in October after a hamstring tear, recorded just six tackles in six games with the 49ers. The former second-round pick has zero interceptions and one sack in his five-year career that has included issues off the field as well. Cook primarily served as a reserve, so the 49ers cornerback corps will still be led by Tramaine Brock and Shareece Wright.

Cook was brought back for defensive back depth after appearing in six games with the 49ers last season. He will likely serve a special teams/reserve role again. There is an outside chance he serves as the team's nickelback, if they decide to bag the Jimmie Ward project at that position.
Cook is currently competing for a starting gig in the 49ers' secondary. His strong showing during training camp has earned him reps with the first team defense during minicamp. His main competition for the position will be Chris Culliver, who missed the entire of the 2013 with an ACL tear.
Cook is expected to start at cornerback. He started 10 games at the position in 2012, but has not recorded an interception in his three-year NFL career.
Cook missed the final 10 games of last season as he battled felony domestic assault charges. He was cleared of the charges in March and should win a starting cornerback role this summer. Cook has good size and could easily be Minnesota's best cover corner, but he also needs to show he can stay healthy after having surgeries to repair a torn meniscus in both knees during his rookie season.
Cook will get playing time at cornerback in nickel packages with Antoine Winfield moving to the slot. He's returning from surgeries to repair a torn meniscus in both knees at different points last season.
Minnesota's second round pick in 2010. Cook is a great athlete for his size (6-2, 212). He might not have the quickness and explosiveness necessary to be a corner in the NFL, but his sub 4.5-second speed gives him a good chance. He should earn a role as a nickelback relatively early in his Vikings career.
