Sims was released by the Rams on Thursday, Rich Hammond of the Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rams shed a pair of veteran defensive ends Thursday by trading William Hayes and releasing Sims. According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Los Angeles Daily News, part of the reasoning behind those moves is that the Rams are switching from a 4-3 front to a 3-4 look under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Sims played 535 defensive snaps in 2016 but only registered 2.5 sacks from the right defensive end spot.

After proving his mettle in 2015 by holding his own across nine starts, Sims was re-signed in the offseason. However, with Robert Quinn and William Hayes positioned to be the team's starting defensive ends, Sims will jockey with Ethan Westbrooks and Quinton Coples for playing time in 2016.
Sims will back up Robert Quinn once again in 2015 after racking up 54 tackles and five sacks over the last two years. The Rams like to rotate in their defensive linemen often, so Sims should see a fair amount of playing time.
Sims appeared in every game in 2013, registering 27 tackles and a pair of sacks while giving Robert Quinn a rest. Sims will see similar duty in 2014.
Sims will back up Robert Quinn at right defensive end once again, filling in when Quinn needs rest. In the same role in 2012, he had an interception to go with three sacks and 36 tackles.
Sims will be the primary back-up behind Chris Long at left defensive end.
Sims is battling for one of the defensive end back-up spots but is more than likely going to end up as one of the first cuts.
Sims will be given a chance to compete for a back-up role at linebacker but he's most likely headed for the waiver wire or practice squad.
