May 12, 2017
Smith was released Friday by the Steelers, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith was signed in late January after spending much of last season on the team's practice squad, but he's now been released due to the fact that the Steelers have to cut their roster down to 90 players. He'll look for an opportunity with another team where he can provide depth at running back, but Smith is unlikely to play a notable role in 2017.

2016 Fantasy Outlook
Smith, an undrafted rookie from West Virginia last year, made waves with the Chargers during his first preseason, only to be released by the team during the last round of cuts. This time around, despite sitting behind third-down back Danny Woodhead and unheralded third-year pro Branden Oliver on the depth chart, Smith could make for an intriguing option in deep leagues should Melvin Gordon struggle to return from offseason microfracture knee surgery. Smith was waived with an injury designation in late August, but he could still rejoin the team once he's healthy, unless he is stashed on injured reserve.
