Free Agent Team Injury Report
Mettenberger was claimed off waivers by the Chargers after a mediocre two-year run with the Titans, in which the former LSU star wound up starting 10 games with middling success. He'll reunite with former head coach and current offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt as he looks to wrestle the primary backup duties away from Kellen Clemens, who has been with the team since 2014.
Mettenberger took the starting job from Jake Locker midway through the 2014 season, but a Week 14 shoulder injury ended his rookie campaign. The offense was far more effective under Mettenberger, who finished with 7.89 YPA, though he had an 8:7 TD:INT ratio and lost all six of his starts. He didn't quite do enough for the Titans to believe in him, as they drafted Marcus Mariota with the No. 2 overall pick. Mettenberger could still win the job if Mariota, who didn't play in a pro-style offense at Oregon, is not ready to start Day 1. But more likely, Mettenberger will hold a clipboard for most of the year, despite possessing prototypical size (6-5, 235) with good pocket presence and arm strength.
The sixth-round draft pick is fresh off a torn ACL, and even though he's expected to be healthy enough to play at the start of training camp, the injury has already hurt his chances of seeing the field as a rookie. With Jake Locker, Charlie Whitehurst, and possibly Tyler Wilson still ahead of him on the depth chart, Mettenberger seems unlikely to be much of a factor in fantasy leagues this season.
