Closer Watch

St. Louis - Fernando Salas appears to be securing the job for the Cards after striking out a pair in a scoreless ninth Thursday afternoon for his fifth save of the season. Given the instability in the St. Louis bullpen to this point, it's likely that he'll be summoned to work the ninth inning until he gives manager Tony La Russa a reason to consider his alternatives again.

Seattle - Brandon League managed to get back on the horse Wednesday and record his 10th save of the season with a scoreless ninth (one walk) against the Angels. Jamey Wright is waiting in the wings, but League appears to have at least temporarily righted the ship.

Texas - It wasn't pretty, but Mark Lowe held on in the 11th inning Wednesday for his first save of the year. We'd be surprised if Neftali Feliz gets replaced after one rough outing, but it's a least a slight vote of confidence that Lowe may be inching closer to a key setup role after his early-season demotion to Triple-A.

Recommended Pickup

Brad Hawpe, 1B, SD -- The plate discipline still isn't pretty (5:15 BB:K in 52 May at-bats), but Hawpe has turned things around recently with a .365/.431/.558 line since flipping the calendar from April to May. Anthony Rizzo is the future at first base for the Padres, but for those in deeper formats where a viable corner-infield stopgap can be utilized to fill in for an injured Derrek Lee, Ike Davis or Adam Lind, you could certainly do worse than giving Hawpe a spin in the short term. Cheap power and RBI opportunities are the aim here, as Hawpe continues to get most of his at-bats in the middle-third of the Padres' order.

Other recent recommendations:Coco Crisp, Jon Jay, Cameron Maybin and Jason Bartlett
