Closer Watch

Chicago (AL) - After announcing Chris Sale would begin serving as the closer earlier in the week, White Sox management changed its tune Friday, saying Sale could return to starting as early as Saturday. With Sale out of the picture, the battle for saves appears to be between Addison Reed and Matt Thornton. What Thornton has in experience, Reed more than makes up for in pure stuff, as his 14 strikeouts in ten innings can attest to. Reed has already converted two saves since Hector Santiago lost the job, and figures to have the clear edge over Thornton for the closing role at this juncture.

New York (AL) - The post-Mariano Rivera save situations have been dicier than the Yankees probably expected, with David Robertson struggling mightily in both his opportunities, on one of which he lost the game after allowing four runs in ninth. Rafael Soriano recorded the save on Thursday, but not before allowing a run of his own in a 5-3 win. Expect the Yankees to stay with Robertson going forward, as the team looks to groom him as their closer of the future, but he'll have a shorter leash if he melts down again.

Washington - Henry Rodriguez demonstrated a short memory after blowing a save Tuesday against Pittsburgh, as he easily dispatched the Pirates in a 4-2 win on Thursday. As has been mentioned in this space before, Rodriguez has a tight grip on the closer job as long as Brad Lidge and Drew Storen remain on the DL. His most likely competition would seem to be Tyler Clippard, but the Nationals prefer him in the middle relief role that earned him an All-Star nod last season.

Recommended Pickup

Addison Reed, RP, CHW - There's been tons of closer shakeup lately in baseball, but perhaps none of the recent reliever waiver wire pickups are as spectacular as Reed. Reed wowed scouts as he tore through Chicago's minor league system last season, amassing an other-worldly 112:15 strikeout-to-walk ratio across four levels, ending the season in the majors. He's replicated that success with the White Sox this season, posting a 14:3 ratio to accompany a 0.00 ERA and 0.80 WHIP. The savvy fantasy owners that drafted Reed speculating that he'd wind up as closer would seem to look very smart right now, as he's the favorite to take over the role following the announcement that Chris Sale would return to the rotation. Reed is probably gone in most AL-only leagues, but his ownership stands at just 20.8 percent in ESPN leagues, 40 in CBS leagues, and 31 percent in Yahoo! leagues. Do as Reed does and don't walk - run - to add him to your roster.
