Recommended Pickup

Jarrod Parker, P, Athletics: Parker was a recommended pickup way back when he was first called up way back in April. Since then, he has a 2.40 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. So why is he only owned in 7% of leagues on ESPN as of this writing? I can understand the concerns. He isn't a big strikeout guy and he's been walking too many batters. That's fair. His 4.44 BB/9 is high, and his 6.47 K/9 is fairly pedestrian. He's been getting somewhat lucky on balls in play as his opponent batting average on balls in play is just .246. He's probably not going to be quite as good as he has been the rest of the season.

That said, Parker was one of the best pitching prospects in the league coming into 2012. The 2.40 ERA in eight starts is still very impressive. And he just threw eight innings of one-hit ball against the Texas Rangers and a lineup that has been brutalizing pitching all season long. Parker has given up just one earned run in his last three starts and is averaging seven innings per game over that stretch. He's had just one start where he has allowed more than two runs. Should Parker be owned in every league? No, probably not. Should he be looked at as a top starter? Not unless he gets his walk rate down. Should you pick him up if you need pitching help? Yes. Absolutely yes.
