Closer Watch

Astros: Normal closer Jose Veras was unavailable to pitch out of the bullpen on Thursday for the Astros as he had thrown three consecutive days. In his place, Hector Ambriz entered the game with a runner on first base and shut down the Rockies adding two strikeouts in the inning to earn his first major league save. Ambriz has been working as the primary set-up man this season to Veras and would be next in line for save chances should Veras struggle. Veras has a 4.70 ERA on the season and is 8-for-11 in save opportunities so he is in no way a dominant presence at the back-end of the bullpen.

Rays: Fernando Rodney pitched a clean ninth inning on Thursday against the Marlins to notch his 11th save of the season. Since a blown save on May 25, Rodney has thrown four straight scoreless appearances with two going for a save and one for a win. Those games were against a struggling Marlins team but it could be just the boost he needs to hold off Joel Peralta and Jake McGee for the closer position.

Twins: Closer Glen Perkins had pitched in three straight games and had the night off on Thursday which paved a path for set-up man Jared Burton to earn his second save of the season. Perkins has been solid this season with 11 saves and only two blown save opportunities, but Burton has been just as strong in the bullpen with a 2.10 ERA in 26 appearances.

Recommended Pickup

Julio Teheran, SP, ATL - Teheran has been regarded over the past few seasons as one of the top pitching prospects for the Braves and among all of baseball but has struggled at the major league level. In fantasy baseball it is not what a player has done in the past, but what he will do the rest of the season that is important and 2013 trends for Teheran are intriguing. Over his last six starts, Teheran has gone 3-1 with a 2.23 ERA and a 23:5 SO/BB ratio. He typically pitches to contact so big strikeout numbers should not be expected going forward, but that formula works well in Atlanta with Tim Hudson being a nice example. Teheran may finally being growing into the big potential that has been projected for him all along.
