Closer Watch
Boston - For the second straight day Thursday, Koji Uehara struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning to seal a win for the Red Sox. He's off to a good start in his newly-awarded closer's role, but the right-hander has been good all year long. Uehara is striking batters out at a 12.9 K/9 clip, and he owns a 1.97 ERA to along with a 0.81 WHIP. Since May 5, Uehara has given up just three runs over 17.1 innings of work. However, the 27-year-old hasn't pitched three consecutive days at any point this year, so if he needs a breather Friday, Andrew Bailey could get the save opp if one presents itself.
Arizona - Manager Kirk Gibson threw a bit of a curveball when he said Thursday that he's unsure how Putz will be used immediately upon his activation from the DL, but it seems likely that Putz will reclaim the ninth-inning job from Heath Bell in short order. Bell pitched a scoreless ninth inning Thursday to earn his 14th save of the season, but he's coming off five consecutive appearances allowing a home run. Perhaps Gibson just want Putz to get his feet wet at the major league level before stepping into the closer's role, but regardless, it shouldn't take long for Bell to force Gibson's hand.

Recommended Pickup
Brian Roberts, 2B, BAL - After successfully rehabbing from sports hernia surgery during the offseason, Roberts made it just three games into the 2013 campaign before suffering a right hamstring injury. He eventually needed to go under the knife yet again, and the 35-year-old has been on the shelf since, but Roberts appears primed to return to the lineup at some point this weekend, if not Friday. While the oft-injured second baseman hasn't played in more than 59 games in a season since 2009, he is expected to resume a starting role with the Orioles, and as long as he's healthy (which admittedly may not be the case by Sunday), Roberts can contribute. It's hard to imagine he'll run as often as he did in the past, but Roberts has some pop and is a career .280/.351/.413 hitter, so those in need of middle infield help could certainly do worse.
Other Recent RecommendationsLeonys Martin, Ike Davis, Kyle Gibson and Roy Oswalt
